Re: 5 Day Menu
JerryB, No telling what is causing your eating issues, and not giving medical advice, but......I had a friend who I hiked with in a group in California who was wellknown in the group for dropping out after 2-3 days on longer hikes because he couldn't eat - sound familiar? For several years he had se...

Re: Have u ever met nicer folks, then at ISRO?
And, one thing I was not expecting, from last year's trip. I have always said that Rock Harbor needed a 3-day-limit campground for families who were not boaters and were not backpackers, to be able to stay and experience the island for a couple days. Surprise to me, that is exactly what I found in W...

Re: Have u ever met nicer folks, then at ISRO?
Mostly true, although I did meet a group of fishermen with big powerboats that were not in the least interested in making room for a kayaker at Beaver Island near Windigo.

Re: Accessible Camping
Shelter 2 in RH has the ramp to it, Shelter 1 has a bit of uneven rock on the approach and a typical 2-step up. RH does have a 1-night limit with exceptions granted in a variety of circumstances. I fell and racked up my knee on a trip, and needed to wait a couple days for the Ranger III to take me b...

Re: West end spring trip
The old pile of timbers a half mile or so east of the current tower on the ridge is indeed the remains of the original Feldtman Ridge fire tower, built by CCC crews in 1930's after the huge fire season in 1936. Last time I was through there, I think there was still an old outhouse just into the wood...

Re: Taking own boat to IR on the Queen - problem
+1 on a great solution, going a few days early so you can camp and explore!! I agree with Ingo to head straight out around to the Northeast side, as long as the weather is ok for that. Belle Isle, maybe. Day trips to McCargoe Cove, various places in that area. Talk to the ranger on the Ranger III. Y...

Re: Campgrounds Mich., Minn., Wisc.
The main issue I had with campgrounds across the UP of Michigan was the cost. I need to raise my budget expectations of what a night of camping will cost! Two places I stopped at, but did not stay, required I purchase a Michigan State Recreation Pass (for Non-Residents) and then beyond that, the cam...

Re: Bug net?
I take a bug net on just about any backcountry trip, and I keep a spare one in my group first aid/repair kit in case it's needed. I don't necessarily use it on every trip, but it's a lot of protection for minimal weight.

Re: 2022 ISRO Attendance
Seems like these stats would be double-counting visitors who stop at the Houghton visitors center then proceed out to the Island or something like that.

Re: Wilderness Stewardship Plan
Interesting. I had a long chat with Denice, the superintendent, while sitting on the dock at Windigo during my visit last summer. She mentioned that this plan was coming, as we talked about the current state of crowding at the most popular campgrounds. If they do build a new campground, I wonder whe...

Re: New Webcam
Lights from the Canadian shoreline, and particularly a light dome from the city of Thunder Bay, are usually visible from, for instance, Huginin Cove campground. That would account for the lights on the horizon to the right

Re: Rock Harbor to Chippewa Harbor in one day
+1 for Huginin Cove loop! I did the loop for my first night about six weeks ago. Just be aware of the time zone thing - your ferry is on Central time. Windigo will be very quiet this time of year - no showers, maybe no drinking water although you have plenty of water available to filter.

Re: Pregnant on Isle Royale
I would take your trip the summer after - you can take a toddler in a baby backpack and plan a relatively easy trip! My very first trip to Isle Royale, there was a young family on the inbound ferry with me that did McCargoe Cove to Chippewa Harbor in 4 days and by their account they had a wonderful ...

Re: Windigo base camping
This year, I was in and out of Windigo a couple times on my ten-day trip and I noticed several families base-camping (complete with coolers, suitcases, and garden carts to haul it all) in the campground, including a multi-family gathering of cousins in one of the group sites. That was a new twist fo...
