Re: Superior storm 11/11/21

Significant wave height is the average of the highest 1/3 of individual wave height. Occasional height is the likely highest individual waves. I googled it, and there was a whole lot of interesting stuff about wave ht definition versus seas vs swells etc. Worth looking into to help understand these ...

Torpified, I think that’s backward. 7pm pacific = 11pm eastern.

Re: Itinerary Critique, General Help for First Time Trip

Given the parks you mention for experience, think about the humidity of the Midwest. That’s what my California and Arizona friends have been surprised by. I can’t give you any fishing advice, but if you are comfortable paddling a canoe or kayak, Beaver Island is close and somewhat protected. Conditi...

Re: How much should you assist other hikers on their plans?

No obligation whatsoever, but I might make a first attempt to give some friendly advice. “That’s a long day, but you can always stop at Hatchet Lake if it’s getting late when you get there”. If they reject that, then I’ve tried and that’s it.

Re: To canoe, or not to canoe, that is the question.

Gotta admit, the Tobin Harbor side of that portage has a great canoe landing! Quiet little cove, sandy bottom, nice flat grassy area to unload......In comparison, the other side is kinda unspeakably bad. There is also a very nice big rock to sit on for a break, just a couple steps north of the trail...

Re: Horne Fire

That comment about the outhouse was on 8/22. The map updates 8/28 or so showed much more of the island burned over, although the cabin end was not. The Post Office is/was on the southeast corner of the island. I will just wait to see the end result next summer!

Re: Horne Fire

Any idea if the old post office dock on Minong Island got burned? Looks like the island burned over, except for the eastern end where that big cabin stands. That Tobin Harbor post office was one of the quirky little things on IsRo. The VII stopped there to drop off mail, and occasionally hikers coul...

Re: 8/18-24 McC-Moskey-Chippewa-Windigo and some observations

There is sort of a cap on visitors by the accommodation limits of the commercial carriers. Plus the number of people there from private boats. Not sure how that affects the available tent sites, since I have frankly never seen a power boater pitch a tent. They invariably take a shelter or sleep on t...

Re: 8/18-24 McC-Moskey-Chippewa-Windigo and some observations

Good question about knowing whether a group site is going to be occupied. I have wondered that myself! Perhaps the rangers could put a weekly note at the sites, indicating which nights were reserved or which site was held out of the reservation process and designated for overflow. Also, as you say, ...

"and then hop back on Voyageur II to come around to Rock Harbor. However, now Lane Cove and Duncan all closed, so trying to figure out if we should cancel or re-plan the trip to a route exploring the Southern side by Rock Harbor." One useful thing - with the kayaks, you can cross to Tooke...

Re: Horne Fire

I read somewhere else that they are trying to hold the fire to the east of the big portage. They aggressively went and fought the fire that spread on Minong Island, protecting historic structures but also limiting spread toward the main developed area along Tobin and Rock Harbor. They are monitoring...

If you had a boat, there’s a couple spots in the area of Caribou Island that are otherworld-ly. But not accessible from the main island.

To get the iridescent colors to show up like that (example-the neck of the loon) is that post-processing, selection of setting, or filter? Just curious. You seem to get a depth of color way beyond what I can get.
