Re: favorite trail and campsite

Lots of good choices, but I would put out there for consideration: campsite Todd Harbor, and trail, the section of the Greenstone running from after the big climb west of Chickenbone Junction for about the next 1.5 miles west, because of the open views of the east and central Island.

Re: Cross country camping between Mt. Franklin and Mt. Ojibway

Hard to get off trail in the steep terrain and dense forest. Better perhaps to just set Daisy Farm as a goal and push on through?

Yes, and Lane Cove is also used by kayakers and canoeists. Expect to share campsites.

Re: Rain jacket or windbreaker replacement

I have had good experiences with several brands of waterproof/breathable fabrics including REI’s brand and Helly-Hansen. My all time favorite for waterproofness, keep-me-from-hypothermia is GoreTex, but that parka is heavier and bulkier to pack than my REI Elements jacket. My rain pants have been RE...

Re: Itinerary feedback!

Two simple ways to make your trip work out better, taking you at your word that you are experienced and fit for long trail days. 1. Do like Torpified suggests, enjoy lunch at Todd Harbor (one of my favorite campgrounds) and go on to McCargoe Cove. Three-Mile your last night gets you time to get that...

Re: Itinerary feedback!

Day 6 is a substantial day of hiking, across the grain of the island. You might consider options that will have you closer to Rock Harbor, although McCargoe is a great campground.

Re: Winter read

I’ve read a few books out of the “help yourself” bin at Daisy Farm. I think that’s where a tattered paperback copy of “The Hobbit” came from.

Re: 2024 trip- Wolves

About bikes, I have friends who do long bike tours, and go from Copper Harbor to Grand Portage via the ferry hop using Rock Harbor as an overnight. They are not riding on Isle Royale. This lets them do a long-ish tour with less backtracking, but not crossing into Canada.

Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help

Another way to extend your time on the Island is to take the IR Queen from Copper Harbor. Gets you two additional half days, one at each end just because of the timing and speed of crossing.

Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help

If you’re planning your last night in Rock Harbour anyway, know that it is very common to hike in from 3-mile quite early in the day(7am is not unusual, before noon is typical). Set up your campsite or shelter, and then spend the day hiking Scoville Point, canoeing Tobin Harbor, taking the day’s MVS...

It’s an 11-year cycle for solar activity, which causes auroras. We are on the upswing of the cycle, heading toward peak activity estimated in 2024-2025. Enjoy the activity while it’s high!

Re: 2024 trip- Wolves

Isle Royale is a really different place than Yellowstone. Almost all of the land parts of IsRo are densely forested so there are rarely open views of the type I experienced at Yellowstone such as looking across the LaMar valley. But there are chances to sit on a shoreline and scan the opposite shore...
