Re: Trekking pole tips?

I once had an Appalachian Trail Conference trailrunner (trail employee who patrols the AT) stop and thank me for using rubber tips on my poles! If the carbide tips are not truly needed for safety, use the rubber tips. They do less damage to trails anywhere including Isle Royale.

Re: sock debate

My favorite brand for hiking sock has disappeared. I’m guessing they went out of business or morphed into another brand. Anyone know what happened to Bridgedale? Their socks dried faster than any other brand. I think they had the balance perfected between wool, nylon, and stretch fiber. Fortunately ...

Re: sock debate

I found sealskins to be very clammy inside. I wouldn’t wear them to hike in, because if the water’s less than ankle-deep my boots work ok and if it’s deeper the sealskins risk getting over their depth.

Re: Lightweight, compact binoculars

I carry Nikon Trailblazer 8x24. They are pocket size and weigh 9 oz in a light soft case. Pocket size, waterproof, not too expensive. I use them a lot for all kinds of viewing, scouting, even a little stargazing. I’ve been quite happy with them.

LOL. My guess is ice? The basic form (sky at the top, waterway in the middle, land at the bottom) is still there..........

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

Seems like in the past couple years, the ranger briefings have changed a little. They now (2016 and 2019) say something like “shelters are first come, first served and shelters can hold six people.” They don’t say “one permit per shelter.”

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

There is one missing person from Isle Royale. Early 70’s, teenager split from a group of juvenile offenders on a group trip. But, he was positively identified n the mainland the next summer although he evaded custody. No one knows how he got off the island.

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

The AT is way different vibe. Staying at shelters is an extrovert’s thing. Shelters are communal. Barring bad weather, I generally choose to use my tent/tarp on the AT. At Isle Royale, the shelters are set up as individual campsites. Personally, in good weather with tent sites available, I would not...

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

My first trip to Isle Royale, one of those slow-moving cold fronts came through and it rained constantly for almost three days. Everyone we met on the Greenstone Ridge was headed for either Moskey or McCargoe to get in a shelter. Under those circumstances the shelter is not full until everyone who w...

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette

Good question. And an extension of that, if it’s raining early in the day, but supposed to stop, and there is an empty tent site almost right across the path, is it fair to ask someone to claim that tent site before you let them come into the shelter”just to get out of the rain for a while”? It had ...

Re: Backcountry Site Availability

When you get your permit, Rock Harbor is actually your first night camping, unless you’re staying at the lodge. Washington Creek is your second night, and then your third night is wherever you hike to.

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste

Yup, ivory bar soap is considered ok, but I choose campsuds because it rinses out with no soapy taste on my dishes.
