Re: TR: 8-11 to 8-15, 2019 [RH,LC,DF,LR,CH ferry to Windigo]

I saw a Moose the first 15 minutes but didn't see another one the whole trip. I thought seeing moose was going to be easy. I talked to a lot of people who didn't see a moose. I heard a lot of reports of Moose by Lane Cove near the gang planks and saw a lot of prints in the mud. Maybe i was too loud ...

TR: 8-11 to 8-15, 2019 [RH,LC,DF,LR,CH ferry to Windigo]

First time to Isle Royale as a I did a solo hike. I splurged and spent a few extra $$ and took the sea plane out of Houghton. I drove 10 hours from Indiana on Saturday and stayed at the Copper Country Inn. Really clean place with nice owners. Kind of a classic old hotel but kept up well. Got up the ...

4 night hike across the island

Heres my itinerary. I only had time for 4 nights but got time since im taking the plane I got 5 days to hike. So I have to hustle on the trails a couple of days. I'm a pretty strong guy and but in real good shape right now. Im pretty sure I can handle 30 lb pack. I estimate I can hike 1.5 to 2.0 MPH...

Re: Logistics- Rock Harbor to Windigo- How do you get back to Rock Harbor to catch boat

Just getting an update. I decided to take the seaplane. Gong to fly into Rock Harbor at noon on the 11th in and fly back late in the afternoon on the 15th form Windigo. Hopefully I can make it across the island in that time. But this should be fun.

Re: Logistics- Rock Harbor to Windigo- How do you get back to Rock Harbor to catch boat

Bobcat1, How often do they have fog or other bad weather resulting in delays. Looks like the seaplane would be an option. The ride looks fun. Just curious. How long would you generally give an average time to hike across the island. Would it be reasonable for an average hiker to fly in on a Sunday m...

Re: Logistics- Rock Harbor to Windigo- How do you get back to Rock Harbor to catch boat

That makes sense. Maybe a simpler route would be to drive to Grand Portage instead of Copper Harbor or Houghton. The drive would be 150 miles more. But I could take the Voyager from Grand Portage to all the way to Rock Harbor. I didn't realize it made stops around the island Then I hike back to Wind...

Logistics- Rock Harbor to Windigo- How do you get back to Rock Harbor to catch boat

Newbie to the island and doing some research and going solo backpacking. I've learned you got to plan for the island. Just brainstorming on an itinerary and thought of taking the Greenstone Trail across the Island (could go either direction). But logistics are my problem. Im from Indiana and would d...
