Re: Michigan seaplane dock moving to Hubbell
Can't be helped. I remember sitting on the bluff at the Wood Lake campground one morning, looking over the lake and feeling about as far from civilization as possible. Then came the drone of a large motor from the south. It got a bit louder, then faded away after several minutes. Based on the day of...

Re: Winter Study update
I wonder if global warming is also, contributing to the decline in the moose population. Not sure. Moose do better in milder winters, but if their numbers get out of hand, and they over-browse, that's not good. I know enough to know that it's complicated. RE: Grim stories of wolves, this is one of ...

Re: Can't plan too early, questions for starting at Windigo
I would suggest at least a single Garmin InReach Mini, with tracking set to every 30 minutes. That way, if he doesn't move in an hour, and you haven't heard from him (and can't get him on the radio), you can send in the cavalry. $300 well spent. You might also want to build a couple of extra days in...

Re: Windigo cabin reservations... grrrr
That's rough, Kolo. My body is also beginning to fail me, so I've been considering other options. I'm looking at staying in a shelter at Windigo (or maybe Belle Isle or Chippewa). With a nice, thick inflatable mattress and a backpacking chair, those accommodations are quite comfortable (especially i...

Yes, I believe a brick oven pizza parlor was buried in one of the new Wilderness Stewardship Plan options. But only in winter. If the lake doesn't freeze.

Thanks, Jerry.
I've been thinking about a trip to Belle Isle. Anything else to recommend it, other than access to cold water? Any trails? Nice beach?

Re: TR: Solo Backpacking Trip to Huginnin Cove – late August, 2023
Who knew that that the folks on Mott Island were employing local residents to engage in covert surveillance of park visitors? Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Moosewatch". I did not observe any sharing of fish between said ducks, but am not willing to conclude that cooperative huntin...

TR: Solo Backpacking Trip to Huginnin Cove – late August, 2023
Day 1: The lake was calm and the sky was cloudy for the trip from Grand Portage to Windigo on the Voyageur II. Saw a pair of otters in Washington Harbor when we were a few hundred yards from the dock. A light drizzle started about the time we reached Windigo, and kept up for the next few hours (what...

The International Wolf Center in Ely, MN is a great place to see wolves
I just made my first pilgrimage there, and was very impressed.

Re: Midwest Mountaineering (Minneapolis) - Going out of Business
Very sad to hear this. I was in the store for the first time early this summer, while visiting my daughter and her husband in Minneapolis (it's where they've purchased their kayaks and backpacking gear). I was very impressed (and I've let them know about the clearance sale).
