Re: TR 5/31-6/8, 2021. MC-LR-CHx2-IL-WL-MBx2 [solo canoe]

Thanks. Our plan has been McCargoe to West Chickenbone to Richie to Intermediate to Wood to Malone. Now we're trying to decide whether to paddle right through Richie versus carry in enough water to spend one night there. I haven't seen any advice about staying out of Richie altogether (just not filt...

FYI: Outhouses are reportedly not stocked with toilet paper this year.

Re: TR (5/31-6/7): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

Thoroughly enjoyable series of posts. But I feel I must protest. As someone who spent countless hours during grad school observing the mating behavior of voles, I can definitively state that they look nothing like ugly squirrels. (By the way, those observations were research-oriented, not a peculiar...

Great report. I love the idea of ditching your canoe and hiking to Chippewa Harbor for a day or two -- I'm going to file that away for future use.

I hope to be in that neck of the woods about 5 weeks from now. Did you see any evidence of the algae bloom in Lake Richie?

Re: Very young children

Tough question. If the rest of the family/group are experienced wilderness campers/backbackers/paddlers, it could work out great. But I'd do a test run car camping first. A great suggestion someone once made on this forum was for families with small kids to camp for 1-3 nights at Washington Harbor (...

Re: Bathing

I pack a lightweight swim suit for bathing/swimming. It doubles as a pair of shorts on unseasonably warm days, or when dry and worn under rain pants, as a second pair of pants if my primary pair are wet.

IR is remote, but still a public place.

Re: Boiling + filtering = too much?

I just filter. You'll use a lot of fuel if you boil.

By the way, be aware that you can take fuel with you on the ferry, just not if you come by plane.

Wonderful read. Thank you. Found myself poring over the boat schedules and planning an itinerary.

Re: IR Seaplanes add a 2nd Beaver

Great video. I've spent a lot of time in Cessnas (as a passenger) over the years, and can agree that they don't have much umph. Makes me want to take a ride in one of these.

Re: Fishing pole needed?

In our two trips paddling the inland lakes, we caught plenty of Northerns, which in my mind justified packing a pole, some tackle, a net, a fillet knife, a lightweight fry pan, some butter-flavored Crisco and breading (weight is less of an issue when traveling by canoe or kayak). We never caught any...

Re: Rock Harbor vs. Windigo

Thanks for all the great insights everyone (I think I'll steer clear of Nevada Barr novels). Fortunately I already have a paddling trip on the inland lakes with my son slated for this summer. 2022 could be my first "two trips in the same summer" year -- backcountry with my son, and a tamer...

Rock Harbor vs. Windigo

I'm trying to convince my wife (who is no longer interested in backcountry backpacking/paddling) to go to the island. I envision our being based at either Rock Harbor or Windigo for a few days, and taking some day hikes.

Which would be your preferred place to be based, and why?

Re: 7-Day Island Crossing

Remember, you could hike the length of the island from Rock Harbor to Windigo, then catch the Voyageur II back to Rock Harbor. Reservations required.
