If you're coming from the MN side, another option would be to head over to Windigo on the Sea Hunter III. It's not as dependent on weather as flying.
That would give you about 4 hours on the island.

Re: CPAP Machine
One question is how wise it would be for someone who needs CPAP to go much further afield than Rock Harbor or Windigo. There are obviously lodging options with electricity at both sites.

Re: Finally getting back!
Sounds like a great trip - exactly what my son and I did on our first visit to IR in 2018 (though the wind was up and we didn't attempt paddling out to Wright Island). The portage into Whittlesey from Chippewa is rocky and meandering, with a bit of up and down - - hopefully you have a nice light can...

Re: Lightweight, compact binoculars
Very helpful discussion. Thanks. I decided that I wasn't really replacing my full-size binoculars, but rather looking for something lighter/smaller to take on back-country trips. The monocular idea was intriguing, but is seemed more conducive to wildlife spotting than watching for several minutes at...

Lightweight, compact binoculars
I'm looking to replace my old 7 X 35 mm binoculars (which weigh in at 2 lbs.) with something lighter and more compact. I really enjoy using them to watch wildlife on the island, but they're awfully heavy. Any suggestions?

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste
We typically carry a collapsible bucket (sea to summit) and that works well This sounded like a great idea to me, but REI is no longer selling the 10 L basin (20 L seems awfully large). I could find the 10 L on Amazon, but as the Brits say, it was "too dear" for me. Ended up with this 12 ...

Re: renting boats v. water taxis
In 2019 we encountered 3 moose at the RH campground, including a big bull that people call Bruce. There was evidence that at least one moose had bedded down in the tall grass just adjacent to where we pitched our tent.

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette
Just joking about people going missing.
Maybe I'll see you this year -- we're starting our trip at McCargoe.

Re: Shelter sharing etiquette
At McCargoe back in the mid-90's, one guy wanted to share my shelter. I was by myself. Good weather and they were other vacant shelters and tent sites. I told him no, I wanted to be alone. I didn't even see him in the campground later on. Think he moved on elsewhere. Creepy. Say, was that the year ...

Shelter sharing etiquette
I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on the etiquette of shelter sharing. Case in point: Two summers ago a couple of guys asked to share a shelter with my son and I at Rock Harbor. All of us were fresh off the ferry, no rain was forecast, and there were plenty of vacant tent sites. I was a ...

Re: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste
I pack a small bottle of hand sanitizer (even before COVID!). More effective than soap for hand washing, and no water needed.

Re: One word for Isle Royale National Park
I finally bought a small satellite messenger for safety reasons. In addition to sending out a distress call, it also allows for a small number of texts (there's limited battery life). My wife has already let me know that she'd rather not hear from me during the week I'm on the island. Not sure if I ...

Re: One thing you wish you knew...
Consider bringing a good-sized rain tarp. It makes cooking and relaxing in camp so much more pleasant on rainy days. Also, when hung across the screen wall of a shelter, gives some relief from blowing rain and wind coming off the lake. We're very happy with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/produc...

Re: Clothing in June
Rain pants are another option to keep pants dry, and they cover the tops of boots and provide an extra layer of warmth when needed. My teenager is willing to pack them (though not always willing to use them).
