My understanding is that from October 1 through October 31 the park is “open” but no staff or services are provided. Which should mean no change for a shutdown.

In 3 trips, everything I've caught on Whittlesey has been along the north side between the east end of the long island and the campground. Usually just trolling down once and ill catch more than we can eat in any day. I think we hit 5 walleye this summer in 1 pass and tossed back as many pike.

No black flies

Mosquitoes, we saw about 1 per day

I too remember when the gas station was not open early enough to get in. I think we found a porta-potty that was being used for construction nearby.

Mosquitoes are very spotty but can be awful.
Some but not horrible at Siskiwit and Hay bay
Horrible at island mine and Chippewa
No issues at Windigo, Rock Harbor, Daisy, Rock Harbor or Mott

No black fly issues at siskiwit, island mine, windigo, hay bay, Chippewa, Whittlesey ...

Pretty chilly at night still. 44 degrees

Black flies are only biting when the mosquitoes aren’t.

There is a wheelchair ramp at one outhouse at Daisy Farm. It would be another good site if you took the taxi down and stayed a couple days. 3 mile may be possible but it is more on a hill.

I guess the campsites could still be more crowded with fewer visitors if each visit stayed for longer trips. They might have a night-stayed report I'll have to check again.
