Re: Aug 2021 First timers

When in August are you going? We’ve got that exact route planned all the way to MC starting the 15th. From MC I’m planning to head directly to 3 mile followed by the short hike to RH and maybe an unladen trip out to Scoville Point for our last full day. Should be a great trip thanks to all the advic...

Re: TR: Manistee River/NCT Loop Sept. 2020

Is there overlap (other than you) between your MRT/NCT companions and your summer '21 IR expedition? Yes - My buddy J, but the wives were not interested. I suspect they're plotting something far more expensive while we're away. The other 2 joining us are a college roommate of ours and one of his tr...

Re: TR: Manistee River/NCT Loop Sept. 2020

Thanks, dc. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The tripod was way better than sitting on the ground or a log and really doesn't take up much space, but not the most comfortable for long periods without any back support. I also wouldn't call it stable by any stretch, but the wide feet at least didn't sink into...

TR: Manistee River/NCT Loop Sept. 2020

First time posting a TR. I saw the post from Grandpa on this route and it inspired me to write up our trip from last fall. Posting this as a separate topic, but mods feel free to combine with Grandpa’s post if more appropriate. My wife and I did the MRT/NCT loop along with another couple, J&J, S...

Re: Decent instant coffee

off topic, because it's not instant, and maybe more in-depth than anybody cares for, but I came across this and thought I'd leave it here: https://www.adventurealan.com/best-camp-coffee-backcountry-barista-pour-over-coffee/ Exactly what I got just a few months ago! Haven't had a chance to try it on...

Re: Flying with a stove

Thanks, torpified. I missed that little tidbit. I guess it makes sense that they wouldn't want to transport and/or store a bunch of fuel canisters of unknown origin, but from what I can tell it's normally OK to send pressurized camp stove fuel canisters via USPS so long as it's not an air shipment. ...

Re: Flying with a stove

Has anybody tried mailing a package with fuel canisters to the island ahead of time? I thought I had read somewhere that all mail delivery to the island was via the Ranger III so it seems like it should be OK. From the videos posted it looked like the stores only stocked the larger cans. I prefer th...

Ed - that's a great find! I think my dad took a few more pictures of the float planes in '84. I'll scan and post a few more next time I'm over there. Kolo - no apologies needed. I'm the noob that came here looking for advice and I got plenty, so all of you veterans can chat about anything you'd like...

Re: AeroPress Go Coffee Maker

Great info, JerryB. I'm a die-hard French press user and simply cannot get the transmission out of neutral without that morning java, but my backpacking press weighs 12 ounces, is a pain to clean on the trail and it's difficult to pack anything inside it. I looked at the AeroPress models which all g...

Re: 2021 Hiking Trip Plan Windigo to RH - looking for feedback & suggestions

dcclark - thanks much for the great advice. It's always a difficult balance for me between seeing as much as possible vs. taking the time to enjoy it. Quantity vs. quality, I guess. Great suggestion, though, to put a flex day on the island and then decide how to use it on the fly. I haven't done the...

Re: 2021 Hiking Trip Plan Windigo to RH - looking for feedback & suggestions

Spot on, torpified! I’ve read so many trip reports and blogs over the past few weeks that I lost track. Credit where credit is due! dcclark has definitely inspired me to find time for the mines, but also has me slightly terrified of boaters on the island. I like your thinking on RH. We can always ma...

Re: 2021 Hiking Trip Plan Windigo to RH - looking for feedback & suggestions

Great suggestions! It would be awesome to see all 3 main ridges in one trip. West to East plan: WC - FL(8.8) - SB (10.3) - DS (9.9) - TH (11.6) - MC (6.6) - 3M (12.6) - RH (2.7) East to West plan: RH - DF (7.1) - MC (8.0) - HL (10.5 via Minong) - IM (13.0) - FL (14.5) - WC (8.8) Either way gives me ...

Re: 2021 Hiking Trip Plan Windigo to RH - looking for feedback & suggestions

Bobcat1 - thanks! I've read several great comments here about McCargoe Cove and was surprised it really doesn't add too much distance. Added bonus is the opportunity for a campfire. Appreciate your input! How tough is that stretch of the Minong between TH and MC? I read a great blog about visiting t...

Re: 2021 Hiking Trip Plan Windigo to RH - looking for feedback & suggestions

Thanks Kolo! Appreciate the feedback. I don’t plan on spending much time at either the start or finish line, but from what I remember I’d completely agree with you on Windigo vs. RH. My east to West plan just didn’t set up as well with distances - first stop out of RH would be DF, but from there it ...
