seymourdunn I guessed i missed it, what kind of camera body do you use? On my upcoming photo trip will be bring Canon 1dx Ml for birds, 90d wildlife/birds, 6d astro/landscape along with a waterproof Nikon. Have narrowed down to a Canon 100-400mm/1.4 extender for birds/wildlife, Rokinon 14mm for ...

Re: Campfires

For what it's worth, it struck me that the orientation we got upon arriving at Rock Harbor was pretty short on LNT principles and their rationale. It seemed to focus instead on bracing visitors for the absence of WiFi, cell phone signals, and Starbucks. "Campfires only in designated areas" was ...

Re: Campfires

On my trip a few weeks ago, I noticed signs of small campfires at Three Mile shelter 1 (up on the hill), possibly Three Mile site 7, and again at another shelter at Moskey. Daisy seems busy enough that you'd get caught, but I still didn't expect to find signs of so many people breaking the rules.

Nice report, thanks! A note on the birch trees though: a couple days ago there was a big birch laying across the tent site #5. Must have happened right after you were there. I know the exact one you mean - it about halved the usable area of Moskey #5. It fell on the storm the night before the ...

Great trail report! I think we met on this trip. I was David, the guy with the SmugMug astro photos. Sorry you got rained out for the eclipse, but I hope you got some killer Milky Way shots. Would love to see them if you're able to post. Hi! I'm glad you found me and reached out! I couldn't find ...

Re: June 2021 weather & bugs

Thanks for the weather/bug report. Any problems from the storm? Just the trails' conditions and my own expectations! I was expecting trails on either flat rocks, like the Greenstone and Rock Harbor trails AND soft, flat soil (like a few photos I'd seen of the Tobin Harbor trail. I was not expecting ...

I hope to be in that neck of the woods about 5 weeks from now. Did you see any evidence of the algae bloom in Lake Richie? I hate to say it, but there is now. You may want to adjust your itinerary. Rangers are recommending no one drink from LR right now, including filtering and boiling, and may be ...

June 2021 weather & bugs

I just put up a trip report in the other forum, but in case it's helpful here, I wanted to summarize our trip last week. June 8-14 was pretty great, all things considered. Very wet, cloudy and chilly (50s day, 40s overnight) from the 10th-13th between Rock Harbor and Moskey Basin from the storm the ...

I knew on day 1 that I'll be coming back... My buddy and I were two first-timers. I purposefully planned our visit during the New Moon to maximize my 14lbs of camera gear during the New Moon's dark skies in a Bortle 2 zone. Plus, there was a partial annular solar eclipse on June 10 at sunrise... We ...

Re: [Info] Cross-Country Camping Zones

Has anyone successfully XC-camped in Zone 13? Or is it an intentional false positive (red flag for rangers)? Based on my measurements (squints and pushes glasses up my nose), it's not possible to be 1/2 mile from the Ojibwe Tower, 1/4 off the trail (Greenstone, Ojibwe, or Daisy Farm trails), and ...

Any luck getting them to fully dry? Definitely don't want these to mold up on me!

OP thanks so much for this! Especially the bit about the Peak Design clip - which I just bought tonight. Allen wrench is officially on the pack list. Could've been a close call.

What's the deal with construction at Siskiwit Bay campground? First I've read about it.

Re: Winter Study 2021 Cancelled

Disappointing, but interesting, and understandable news. Any thoughts on how this will impact wildlife-human interactions this season? No change? Or friskier foxes, more curious wolves, or bullish meese?
