Re: Tents in Shelters

On our first trip to the island, I put our tent up in the shelter at Moskey. The wind was ripping down the lake and my tarp wasn't enough, so we put up the tent in an effort to help stay warm with another wind break. Now picnic tables in the shelters... Just a few weeks ago the person who had claim...

Re: latest on beaver damage

Todd Harbor to Hatchet Lake has a flagged off detour across an established beaver dam. Coming up on it I was a bit concerned, but it was solid really all the way across and was easy to navigate (with poles) even for this newbie.

Re: rerouting of Feldtmann Loop trail N of Siskiwit Bay

Also, the first three miles or so leaving Siskiwit towards Feldtmann is waist to chest deep weeds. Leave that camp with your rain gear on and your bug spray refreshed. :)

Re: rerouting of Feldtmann Loop trail N of Siskiwit Bay

I just returned today from the island. There were explicit instructions on this leg of the trail heading out of Siskwit towards Island Mine to follow the beach as torpified mentioned (purple line on map) . We hiked from SLD past Island Mine and into Sisikwit and there were no directions posted comin...

Re: How much TP do you pack?

Took 1.5 (double) rolls and returned with about .25 roll for two people, 8 days. I have absolutely no problems with carrying extra toilet paper weight.

Re: How much TP do you pack?

FYI: Outhouses are reportedly not stocked with toilet paper this year. https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/welcome-to-isle-royale-during-covid-19.htm I fully expected they wouldn't be. I'm going to pack one and a half "double" rolls. I will also make sure and report back on how much we...

How much TP do you pack?

Two people for 8 days. One roll? Two?

I feel like this is something I really don't want to guess wrong on.

Edited to add: I have a kula cloth so tp usage would just be for outhouse doodies. (see what I did there? )

Re: TR (5/31-6/7, 2021): Ishpeming, Feldtmann---and some commuting

I am totally nerding out on all of the recent TR's, we will be arriving on the island this coming Saturday. I always learn a little something from these accounts to "put in my back pocket" and your post has helped to calm my nervous energy about visiting the island for the first time. Than...

Re: Windigo Storm 6/08/21

Yikes! We had a crazy weather event called a Derecho last summer here in central Iowa. My husband and I own a tree service and our crews are still cleaning up damage from that storm nearly a year later. I hope the islands recovery is speedier than ours has been. It will be interesting for us to see ...

JerryB wrote: Sat Mar 06, 2021 2:00 pm A great route and trip. I have done it several times. You chose Todd Harbor over McCargo and neither choice would be wrong.
Staying in McCargoe on our first night was also a consideration, but I think I want to save the "extra" night for later in the trip if need be. We'll see!
