Only done the island once (a couple weeks ago), and it was the first real trip for any of the guys in my group. However, we followed an itinerary pretty close to what you're looking at, although we had 1 extra day.
I will concur with the group on the Moskey Basin route. The shelters there are ...

Good TR.
I can confirm the same as you guys experienced on the Desor H20. If you see my TR from the week prior to yours we did the Greenstone in the opposite direction. While we fell in love with the VIEW of Desor (it was our first interior lake campsite, so probably that first love kinda thing ...

Hey the leeches were just part of the fun! We definitely enjoyed the trip more and more as it went on. Sitting on the beach at 3 Mile was incredible. Warm and sunny enough to swim in superior was a nice plus too!

After months of planning we finally made our way to the island last week. Man reintegrating into the real world kinda sucks...

We'll be on the ferry to the island next Saturday. Bummed about the fire ban, but we will be honoring it.

Re: First time Trip planning
Just wanted to followup on this as we are starting to get VERY close to our trip (we'll be on the island in 2 weeks). I believe we have settled on the following itinerary:
7/24 Arrive at Rock Harbor, get campsite at RH campground, hike Scoville point WITHOUT packs, and grab evening meal at the ...

Re: Inland fishing for backpackers?
Gotcha, I guess it never even occurred to me that there might be lakes that don't really hold any fish at all...although now that you mention it I'm almost certain I did look at that chart on here that mentioned some lakes not having a fish population.
You hit exactly on what I was thinking...is it ...

Inland fishing for backpackers?
We're planning our first trip to the island for this summer (last week of July). Our main goal of the trip is backpacking from Windigo back to Rock Harbor. We're arriving in RH on a Saturday, taking the Voyageur II from RH to Windigo on Sunday, then hiking back to RH to catch our ferry home on ...

Re: Trekking pole tips?
I once had an Appalachian Trail Conference trailrunner (trail employee who patrols the AT) stop and thank me for using rubber tips on my poles! If the carbide tips are not truly needed for safety, use the rubber tips. They do less damage to trails anywhere including Isle Royale.
That's kind of ...

Trekking pole tips?
As a first timer planning a trip this summer, I'm wondering if anybody had any advice on the tips to use for your trekking poles on the island? I used my REI coupon to get a new set of poles, and they just came with the standard carbide tips and baskets. Those are probably fine, but sometimes when I ...

Re: First time Trip planning
If you just pretend everything is on Eastern time, you will (at worst) be 1 hour early for your ride on the Voyageur. That's how I've always worked, at least!
See, to show just how awful I tend to be with that timezone math, I had it in my head we'd be an hour late! But you are correct ...

Bobcat, HA!
One of the buddies that is going with me lives in the Chicago burbs. I have already put him in charge of remembering to help us with the Central time thing since that middle ferry ride is on Central time! It makes for a pretty early departure for us Eastern Time Zone folks.

Re: First time Trip planning
Thanks for a couple of good quick thoughts, guys. I echo dccalrk's comments compared to FB. I'm sure there is far less traffic here than any FB groups, but at the same time this is a medium that lends itself to thorough thought out responses. I'm on FB, but I just find these old school forums a ...

First time Trip planning
First of all let me thank everyone that is making this community. Web forums seem to be a dying trend, with FB groups and others, but there is still something special to me about this type of communication platform. No better way to have quality online discourse focused on specific topics! Glad I ...
