Re: Post your 2022 bug reports here!
Any reports as of now, for the west end of the island?
I got eaten alive by mosquitos on the Feldtmann loop last week (Wednesday 8/17 to Sunday 8/21), but no one else I ran into seemed to be bothered by them. I had to put my head net on several times. I treated my clothes with permethrin, but ...

Re: Coffee On The Isle
It's more expensive than Starbucks Via, but I've been really happy with the instant coffee from Ruby Coffee. It's a small coffee roaster from Central Wisconsin and the instant packets work with both hot and cold water (though I found extra stirring needed when using cold water). Here's the link ...

Re: Post Hike Showers
Last year, I rented a towel at Rock Harbor for $2.50 when I bought my shower tokens. There was a laundry hamper inside the store to drop off your damp towel after you were done with it.

Re: Compare and Contrast: Lane Cove to McCargoe vs. McCargoe to Lane Cove
I agree with Vandy because you will need to carry extra water for that long stretch on the Greenstone without any access to water. I hiked McCargoe to Lane Cove last June and I wished that I'd brought an extra liter of water because it got so hot up on the ridge.

Re: Washington Creek Campground preferred sites
Not sure if you're planning to camp or stay at the lodge in Rock Harbor, but if you are camping there is a one night stay limit at the Rock Harbor campground.dadandladadventurers wrote: Mon May 30, 2022 2:07 am We are going to stay at Windigo for 2 nights and Rock Harbor for 3.

Re: First Trip Itinerary Help.
Day 4: Daisy Farm to Rock Harbor, with a potential to visit Suzy’s cave or do the Scoville point loop depending on our energy levels. 6.6 miles.
Just noticed your mention of Suzy's Cave! If you are hiking the Rock Harbor Trail between Daisy Farm and Rock Harbor, it is a very minor detour to ...

Re: First Trip Itinerary Help.
sounds like we should be ready to set off from RH as soon as we can to make it to Three Mile/Daisy and grab a spot for the first night.
You may want to consider taking the Tobin Harbor trail out of Rock Harbor when you arrive. Even though it is about a half mile longer, it is a faster trail ...

Re: First Trip Itinerary Help.
On Day 4 after you've set up camp in Rock Harbor, I recommend hiking the Scoville Point loop. Absolutely gorgeous and there's a bald eagle nest along the trail!

Re: Huginnin Cove Loop: Clockwise or Counterclockwise?
Thanks, Bobcat & Torpified! When I looked at the NatGeo map, I didn't see too much difference in elevation between the sides of the trail, so I couldn't figure out why DuFresne was recommending doing the East trail first. Guess it is just personal preference and my preference is definitely to leave ...

Huginnin Cove Loop: Clockwise or Counterclockwise?
What are your opinions on which direction to hike the Huginnin Cove Loop, clockwise or counterclockwise? I have the 3rd edition of DuFresne's "Foot Trails & Water Routes" and he says, "Although it's probably a much-debated topic, many feel the loop is easier to hike by first following the East ...

Re: Water filter
I'm going to jump on this thread too. I see the national park recommends a purifier like bleach in addition to a filter. How many of you actually do that? I have a Sawyer Squeeze which has always been sufficient when viruses aren't a concern.
I used my Sawyer Squeeze last year without any ...

Re: What are you spending your 2022 REI dividend on?
I recently learned about Tenacious Tape as an alternative to duct tape and am excited to pick up a roll and try it out. Currently my emergency kit has the last few feet of a duct tape roll (with the inner cardboard removed) and I ended up using it twice on my trip to IR last summer when I ripped the ...

This whole trip report has been wonderful, but I'm especially excited to see your notes about your paddling. Was the paddle out to Beaver Island worth dealing with the boat traffic? A couple months I asked a question about this elsewhere on the forum because I'm planning to rent a kayak for a half ...

The video is great! I'm planning to do the Feldtmann Loop this next August so I appreciated being able to see the Senter Point detour that I've previously only read about.
