Re: Trekking Pole Tents

I have an X-Mid 2 and have brought it to the island as well as many other places. It’s a fantastic tent - rugged, very waterproof, well ventilated, big vestibules, fly first pitch, and simple. I’ve forgotten my trekking poles before and easily pitched it with some stout sticks. The only drawback is ...

Re: Itinerary Question

We did the Feldtmann loop a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Siskiwit Bay is a fantastic campsite right on the bay. Rainbow Cove near Feldtmann Lake is a great place to have dinner and watch the sunset. The fire tower on the ridge is also a highlight- good lunch spot. Enjoy!

Re: First timer itinerary feedback

Welcome to the forum and your first trip to the island! You’re going to love it. I’d suggest planning at least one zero day so you have some flexibility for bad weather or rest. Personally, I wouldn’t plan a six mile hike right after getting off the ferry at 3pm, but the nice thing about isle Royale ...

Re: 2 Nights Backpacking Suggestions

If your main goal is to see a moose and you’re planning to go into Windigo, I would consider heading towards Feldtmann Lake. Moose are pretty prevalent in Windigo and toward Feldtmann Lake. You can also do dinner at Rainbow Cove, which is gorgeous at sunset if the weather is nice. If you have a ...

Re: "Old Reliable"

There are some new food storage rules (because of the wolves) for specific campsites on the eastern end of the island. Take a look at the website for specifics.

Re: August Boy Scout itinerary

You verify whether you need a "youth camp" license? If there are 5+ scouts who will not have a parent present in your group, state of MI requires this. It's in the fine print in the initial permit approval email from NPS. I'm taking 9 kids from our troop in July, we were lucky that 5 of them have a ...

Re: Cross country camping

Hey all, I’ve been in the Island twice and going again to hike the Feldtmann loop in August. I’m thinking about taking the first ferry out of Copper Harbor as well and doing some cross country camping for the first time, probably not every night but most nights.

I’ve done a tiny bit of ...

I haven’t heard of any water problems at hatchet lake the last few years.
Moskey is really nice but I don’t know about it having or not group sites.
Thanks!

Re: Water filter

I'm going to jump on this thread too. I see the national park recommends a purifier like bleach in addition to a filter. How many of you actually do that? I have a Sawyer Squeeze which has always been sufficient when viruses aren't a concern.

August Boy Scout itinerary

I think that's a nice itinerary --- the option for little Minong, a little Greenstone, plus some trails that cross the island's corduroy. Very subjectively, your hardest days are at the start. But you're unlikely to run short of daylight: if your troops are troopers, you should be fine.

A few ...

Re: 7/12/21-7/18/21 [HIKING](Feldtmann loop)

The video is great! I'm planning to do the Feldtmann Loop this next August so I appreciated being able to see the Senter Point detour that I've previously only read about.
What a great video. I agree it was nice to see the Senter Point area. Thanks for your tips on r/Ultralight. I’m diving into ...

August Boy Scout itinerary

Hi Everyone. Our Boy Scout troop is planning a trip in August. They’ve done the Feldtmann loop previously, but we need to split up into two groups this time. I’d love to hear any thoughts you have on the following itinerary (Things we can expect from the trail, campsites along this route, general ...
