Re: Backpacking Bell Mountain Wilderness In Missouri

I've been a few times, always in March and always from the Ottery Creek Trailhead. It would be wise to check in with the ranger district in advance to make sure there aren't any planned closures. Those happen for various reasons. There are also some nice parts of the Ozark Trail. Thanks for the ...

Re: Backpacking Bell Mountain Wilderness In Missouri

I've never been but after a bit of research it does look interesting. In places, it has similar volcanic origin geology as that on The Island. The main downside I see is many of the trails are multiuse to be shared with bikes and horses. Paddling appears to be popular as well. Thanks, Ed. Good ...

Backpacking Bell Mountain Wilderness In Missouri

Anybody ever done it? I’m looking for something midwestern, about the same distance from the Chicago area as a jaunt up north to Isle Royale or the Porkies, but that I can do when Isle Royale is shut down. I came across this place (part of the Ozark Mountains/St. Francois Mountains) and the geology s ...

I can’t find anything specific to Chickenbone' but this article about a bloom on Lake Superior discusses some causes.

Re: Nachusa Grasslands Prescribed Fire Video

Hi John,

Old post, but I did a day trip out to Nachusa recently and really enjoyed it. Kudos to you for your volunteer work. I think helping at Nachusa is in my future.

Re: Recent trip to Zion Canyon National Park

Beautiful pictures, Ed. Southern Utah is gorgeous. I just returned from a backpacking trip to Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument just a bit to the east of Zion. Pretty remote. I’ll have to put up a post sometime. Trump is trying to reduce the size of Escalante as well as Bears Ears National ...

Re: 2 wolves cross to IR-then go back

This article gives a little background to the information in John’s 11/1/2017 post.

Interesting about the wolves that came to IRNP and went back to the mainland.

Re: Red River Gorge in Kentucky

Thanks, Paul! I really appreciate it. Could we make a loop starting down by the Koomer Ridge Campground to the Rough Trail west to Pinch em Tight Trail and Buck Trail? I found a book: Hiking Kentucky's Red River Gorge by Sean Patrick Hill. I'm going to get that. I was half expecting a book by Jim ...

Red River Gorge in Kentucky

I'm looking at doing a 3 night, 4 day backpacking trip to this place in the Daniel Boone National Forest in late October or early November.

Does anyone have any experience with the Red River Gorge and routes? Thanks.

Re: Porkies Trip Next Weekend, any joiners?

Have a great time! I just returned from my third trip to the Porkies (May 13-16, 2016). We were north of your route. Escarpment Trail (camped on the ridge) to Government Peak Trail to North Mirror Lake Trail (camped at Mirror Lake) to Correction Line Trail to Big Carp River Trail (camped at 1st of ...

iPad iOS using Safari: looks great with the 3 smaller pictures.

iPhone iOS using Safari: no change, still a single large picture with mist on the water.

Moose trapping on Isle Royale 1934-1937 from Facebook

This was on Isle Royale's Facebook today. Really interesting and includes pictures. Check it out. "From the Archives! Moose Trapping on #IsleRoyale #NationalPark From 1934 to 1937, the Michigan Conservation Department live-trapped 71 moose on the island for release on the mainland. The project was ...
