Re: Canoeing From Lane Cove to Belle Isle?

The Moskey-Richie portage is the hardest! Yes :(, but it builds character  Especially if you're double backing for packs. Yes :?, but it builds character  lol tell that to my wife after 7 1/2 miles of the Moskey-Richie portage. It didn't help that it was our first portage of the trip. By...

The Moskey-Richie portage is the hardest! Especially if you're double backing for packs.

Enjoy! It's a wonderful place.

Re: Kevlar Canoes

My wife and I made the Duncan-Tobin portage last summer with our Wenonah Kevlar canoe. It definitely made the trip easier but at 18 1/2 feet, those switch backs are a 3 or 4 point turn. Yeh, you can bump rocks with a 16 footer. The good thing is you're just about to the top when you hit the switchb...

Re: Kevlar Canoes

Very cool video! My wife and I made the Duncan-Tobin portage last summer with our Wenonah Kevlar canoe. It definitely made the trip easier but at 18 1/2 feet, those switch backs are a 3 or 4 point turn. My suggestion is to take first load to the top (intersection), drop canoe and go back and get the...

Re: Canoeing From Lane Cove to Belle Isle?

like Ingo said, "It depends". My wife and I did the rock harbor to rock harbor route through moskey-richie-mccargo-5 finger route in a 18ft kevlar canoe last summer. Believe it or not, our calmest water on the entire trip was rounding the point from Birch Island to Pickerel Cove. It was gl...

Re: Private property on IR?

We ended up cruising down Tobin to Scottsville point. We passed almost all the cabins/homes and ended up talking to a couple visiting their grandparents place. It was fun seeing much of the island you can't see as a hiker.

Re: Chippewa Harbor via Lake Superior by canoe

I talked to a guy on Isle Royale last week that paddled from Caribou Island to Chippewa Harbor and back in an open canoe. He made it but in my opinion was very lucky. After seeing some of the weather that L. Superior can turn up, it's not worth the risk. So yes, it can be done but it's very risky. B...

Re: Private property on IR?

Very cool. Hopefully we'll be able to cruise the canoe down Tobin around those islands. If they are there, we'll stop and say hi and say you sent us.

Great photos! You sure can get around the island bringing your own boat.

Re: Private property on IR?

wow, very fascinating. It'll be interesting as we paddle through on what we stumble upon. So park users passing by are permitted to land? I really don't want to intrude but a resident dock might be a nice location for lunch or snack break.

Private property on IR?

Are there private property and private residents on Isle Royale? From the aerial views, I can see a buildings and docks at various locations but doesn't show anything on the map. Another thought is that these are NP staff residents.

Re: Six Nights in August

Plans have changed a little. Thursday: McCargo to Lane Cove This is the only part I have a comment on: it's a long, hot trek. Be prepared! I second that but still doable. One thing to remember is there's no water between chickenbone and lane cove so if it's hot, you might run out. I did this same s...

Satellite phones work. I saw a guy using a rented one for his work the last time I was on Isle Royale. If you're wife is worried that much, you can look into a "SPOT Satellite Messenger". It allows you to send text messages indicating that you're okay and records you global positioning. Fr...
