Re: Route options for 2013!

Yes, I think you're crazy  ... But given that, it seems like a lot of hassle to bring the kayak just to go to/from Daisy Farm. I'd consider paddling all the way to Moskey. If you're set on getting up on the ridge you could loop back thru Daisy Farm from W Chickenbone -- the last day would be ...

Re: 1st Isle Royale Trip in the planning phases

Sounds like a good trip to me. The 7 miles from Daisy Farm to catch the Ranger III by 9:00 am seems pretty aggressive to me, though. I'd probably go for Three Mile the night before, instead of Daisy Farm. My other thought is to consider taking the Queen IV out of Copper Harbor--that gets you out to ...

You're a good man Capt Don! And thanks for the cell info.

Sailing the North Channel

Ingo, I am new to sailing. I love the pictures and advice you post. How much of a hassel is it to take a sailboat into Canada? Next year I will have my hands full with Isle Royale and Lake Michigan but the pictures you posted make this a possible trip for down the road. Now that things are coming ...

Re: Outfitter-Grand Marais

The canoes would be fine for paddling to Mott Island--they're just not great for portaging. Most days the summer weather will be OK for a paddle in Rock Harbor, but do watch the weather. I would allow a couple hrs for the paddle (each way). The other option is to rent a boat and motor at the marina ...

Re: Killarney Provincial Park

Sailed up Baie Fine some years ago. This is a lake we hiked up to. Water was much bluer than shows in the pic. Trailhead is at the very end of the bay.

I believe this the at the end of Baie Fine, but if not, it's representative.

Re: Outfitter-Grand Marais

Jerry, no I haven't rented a canoe on the island--not the best for the trips I take. They do have them, but I think they keep most on the Tobin Harbor side, as you've noticed, since it's more protected. There is a canoe rack near the Rock Harbor docks--seemed to be multi-purpose with personal ...

Re: Grand Portage Casino

I am thinking about staying at the casino in a few weeks, and I am wondering if you would recommend staying there if I am traveling with my two young kids. Do you have any advice before I book my rooms there? Thanks in advance. No reason not to stay there with kids. It's basically a hotel with a ...

Re: Father and Son trip advice

$55/day, for what appears to be a plastic canoe? Egad! But it is certainly more convenient. Does anyone know if they let them go out to the island? (some don't)

Re: Father and Son trip advice

Any campground on Lake Superior with a dock has shelters. And there are tents sites at all campgrounds (shelters or not). The park's annual "newspaper" has a list with all the relevant info: http://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/upload/Greenstone_2012.pdf . The online park map also shows the ...

Re: Father and Son trip advice

Coming into Rock Harbor you pretty much have to take the water taxi to get inland without significant paddling/portaging. It's on demand, so you have can have them drop you off/pick you up whereever and whenever you want. You do need to make reservations in advance. Of course it is somewhat weather ...

Re: Father and Son trip advice

The obvious trip is "across the island" from McCargoe Cove to Chippewa Harbor (or Malone Bay). Great campgrounds and fishing all along the way, so it's hard to go wrong. There's a few variations depending on where you come from, time, and budget. The Voyageur II out of Grand Portage can drop you off ...

Re: TR - 8.4-8.7 2012 - Feldtmann Loop [counter clockwise]

I didn't know if there were rules about camping in group sites, but since there were few others on the trial while we were there we didn't worry much. We did run into two church/camp group that had 20+ kids (boys and girls split up) on the island for 13+ days. They were all camped in the shelters ...

Re: Toilet paper

Theory on McCargo being wiped out: it's a popular starting point, folks use the facilities and realize "Oh crap, I forgot to bring TP", and quietly sneak it into their pack. Personally I assume there will be none anywhere, butt usually bring most of it home.
