Re: Misc Gear
The "Instaflator" will work with Therma-rests http://www.lesliespool.com/Home/Floats- ... 76052.html Got one for my Nemo. Not quite as convenient at the Exped pumpbag, because it's so long, but it's light and does work. And a whole lot cheaper .

Got an update this afternoon and the Ortho Doc is recommending that he have surgery on the wrist. I guess "minimally displaced" is still "displaced".

Re: Misc Gear
Yeah, I just don't like the horizontal tubes. The Exped creates a rather flat surface without much dip between them. I think that's one reason it's so comfortable. But like I said, it's a personal preference.

I've replaced a bit of gear this last year and thought I'd share some thoughts now that I've used it all a little, and on the island... - Exped UL 7 Synmat http://www.exped.com/exped/web/exped_homepage_na.nsf/0/48E15F320AFDC7EDC125767E00705EC7?opendocument Love it. Re: Going Solo
My only solo trip was a short one doing the Huginnin loop at the other end. With 4-5 days you could do the Feldtmann loop, which I haven't done, but will likely be my next solo trip. If the seaplane cost isn't prohibitive, I'd look at that possibility. As far as being busy, hike early, camp early, a...

Here's the off-the-cuff version until I get a chance to find my notes and put it all up on my website. Original plan was to hike from McCargo to Windigo via the Greenstone with my daughter Laura and her boyfriend Scott. Quick pics are here (you shouldn't need a FB account): https://www.facebook.com/...

Re: Camping in Grand Portage, MN
Yes, the campground is at the marina near the lodge and casino. It's a couple miles from the boat dock on the other side of the bay. No other campground close, but if you search the threads there's plenty of opinions on where to stay. Mine is a room at Ryden's--$50 for 3, nothing special (understate...

Re: What's the bug situation like currently?
Last week at Chickenbone, Hatchet, Todd: no flies to speak of, mosquitoes moderate, mostly in the evenings. Not near head net quantity, just need to keep the bug dope handy.
No ticks on the island--at least not any kind that bother humans.

Re: Great Lakes surface temps at all time high.
It was very warm this week (relatively), both on the boat and on the island. Significantly warmer than any previous trip.

Re: Isle Royale books
Forgot to mention, most of the books mentioned are available through the Isle Royale Natural History Association at: http://www.irnha.org They do great work and deserve the support. Second that! If you're not supporting a local business, consider supporting the park, even if it is a couple bucks mo...

TR: 7/23-7/26, 2012 [McCargoe-Windigo cut short]
Well the plan was to be at Washington Creek tonight, but we're in Superior, WI instead with a broken wrist (not mine). We did get to ride on a ranger boat from Todd Harbor to Windigo, though . More to come ...

Anyone on the Voyageur II 7/23?
I'm heading out Monday. If you're on the boat, say "Hi". 50s, gray beard, short hair, glasses, likely to hang out on the bow a lot. With daughter and her BF.
Back next Sat. on the Sea Hunter.

Re: First time going to IR gear & fishing questions
What Ed said. And if you're on the lake, you're probably in a shelter, which are cooler than a tent. On July/Aug trips, I've been zipped up tight in my sleeping bag one night and laying on top of it the next. You never know...
