Re: Canoe Outfitter in the Copper Harbor Area
It's been a few years, but the last time I looked I couldn't find anyone around C.H. or Houghton. I rented from Sylvannia Outfitters in Watersmeet, near the WI border where US 2 & US 45 intersect. It was the closest outfitter (maybe the only one) I could find in the U.P. with a kevlar canoe--ren...

Re: Cheap motels in Houghton?
Any feedback on the Super 8 a few blocks east of IR HQ? Looks like it could be a little quieter than many others which hug the main roads. I'm going in two weeks for one night (March, 2012). We stayed there in 2005 but nothing stands out in my memory. Checked my trip log and all I said was "Ni...

Re: First timer visiting
The consensus seems to be to stay away from ROck Harbor and Daisy Farm. Is that area really that crowded? Nothing there to see? Well, everything is relative :). The shoreline along Rock Harbor (the body of water) is quite scenic. But you will see/hear a few power boats and more people along the way...

Hey Mom, I second Ed on the McCargoe Cove to Chippewa Harbor idea, assuming you'll be coming on the Voyageur II out of Grand Portage. Stay the first night at McCargoe and hike up to the mine--there's a neat mine shaft I'm sure your son will enjoy. Then you have some choices between Chickenbone West,...

Re: Ist Time "Seniors" Need Advice
Plus, my assumption is that the Lodge will be closed when we arrive on September 10, so, if correct, available beer will be a non-issue. This is a snag unless we are allowed to bring some with us on the ferry? Yup, you're correct. Bringing it on the boat isn't an issue, but carrying it may be (and ...

Re: Ist Time "Seniors" Need Advice
Choosing between Moskey Basin and Chippewa Harbor for a layover day is a tough one for me. Both are beautiful. At Moskey the shelters are right on the water looking out over the bay--great for just hanging out. Chippewa gives the opportunity to explore the rugged Superior shoreline. I'd probably go ...

Re: Ist Time "Seniors" Need Advice
Hey John, welcome to the forums. If you aren't aware of the group camping regs on I.R., a group is defined as 7-10 people. They require a permit before you arrive, you may only camp at designated group sites, and you must stick to your defined itinerary. Parties of 6 or less simply register and fill...

Re: 2012 early trip itinerary thoughts?
The Voyageur II does not stop at Moskey, so you can't use it to shuttle from there to Chippewa.

Not any help, Jess. Haven't made it there yet, despite the family cabin being only an hr or so away. Hope to get up for at least a day hike this summer.

Re: gear list (for Midwest Ed)
The other thing I need to overcome is that I tend to be a cautious contingency planner. ... I know I need to stop that practice, but I always feel like somehow I may be unprepared! Were you a Boy Scout, too? I'm the same way, but getting better. My first aid bag is probably 1/4 of what it once was,...

Depending on how much it is, a chair and/or pillow. I always carry both, but my old thermarest chair won't work with my new pad. The pillow saves a few oz and is very comfy.

Re: 1st timer
That works, and is a nice little trip! All are great campsites. And good fishing all along the way. The Chippewa Harbor dock is at the campground, so there's no paddling involved the day you get there. The portage into Whittlesey is kinda rocky/rooty, but the one into Wood Lake is easy (as I recall,...

Re: Windigo or Rock Habor
You really can't go wrong either place. The Rock Harbor area has more scenic coastline and ridgeline views. Windigo has the advantage that you can camp there for 3 consecutive nights, and it's less developed and busy. Since you're considering the seaplane, I assume you're thinking of renting a kayak...

Re: Windigo or Rock Habor
If you're set on going from Copper Harbor, then Windigo is not a practical option for a 3-4 night trip. But that's OK. There's plenty around Rock Harbor, especially with a kayak. Are you camping? If so, you can only stay 1 consecutive night at the R.H. campground, but there are several within easy p...
