Re: Guys who caused the Mt. Franklin Fire Charged
I'm curious how they identified and charged them almost 2 yrs later.

Hay Bay? Just guessing, one of the few docks I haven't been to.

Re: Walkie Talkies
With the terrain and trees 7 miles is very optimistic with consumer grade radios, despite what they may claim. Generally they're limited to a relatively clear line of sight. For a party with different hiking speeds they may be useful, however, I wouldn't count on more than a mile or maybe two, and e...

Re: Quickest Way from Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm Campground
The Tobin Harbor trail is the easier route vs the Rock Harbor trail, especially with full packs. That time of year a shelter at Daisy Farm is possible, but never guaranteed, of course. Remember you will have to do orientation and registration when you get off the boat, so probably 1/2 hr or so befor...

Re: favorite trail and campsite
Fav trail: the last 10 yards of the Tobin-Duncan portage! :D Either end, doesn't matter, can't beat the relief of seeing water at the end and knowing you can finally put down the canoe. Backpacking, probably the middle section of Siskiwit to Feldtmann, some really pretty spots along the beaver pond,...

Re: Trailer-Sailor
I think if you exceptionally experienced sailing small boats in big water that they aren't meant to be in, and you live for the thrill and are willing to risk your life for it, then it's OK. Otherwise, well, no. My brother and I have talked about taking his very seaworthy 15' boat that he sails regu...

Re: First timer looking for feedback
I second dcclark. The Feldtmann Loop is a great hike for that amount of time, and optionally add Huginnin Cove at the end. And I am in the minority I guess and had a lovely evening at Island Mine, although it was a bit earlier--if the trees haven't fully leaved out it's got a nice open feeling.

Re: First to sail a Sunfish Sailboat around Isle Royale???
Congratulations Adventures In Reach! and thanks for nudging me closer to my own trip there. I'm new to the site, and not sure where to go with my question (so, no offense intended). I've never been to Isle Royal, and am looking to buy a "trailer-sailer," like a San Jaun 21 or Catalina 22....

Re: Rain jacket or windbreaker replacement
The Marmot Precip is an old standby for light and waterproof. Mine is still going strong after at least 10 years, although not a ton of use beneath a pack since I do more paddling. Looks like it's now the "Precip Eco", so not sure how it's changed. Also have a similar North Face I like, bu...

Re: Itinerary feedback!
Upon arrival, do the rangers usually go over your itinerary with you? Is that where we would get feedback on trail conditions? Ideally, yes. But at that time of year they'll be just staffing up and training, so it may or may not be very helpful. I read at least one report where someone who flew in ...

Re: Itinerary feedback!
I tend to be in the less is more camp, with that in mind, a few thoughts: I'll second Bobcat on the last day. That's a heck of a hike to catch a 3:00 plane, at least for most folks. If you just push on through you won't get much appreciation of that end of the island. But since I haven't done an end...
