Re: TR 5/31-6/8, 2021. MC-LR-CHx2-IL-WL-MBx2 [solo canoe]

Thanks for the report! McCargoe to Richie is a good day, isn't it  ? The map is confusing on the McCargoe to Chickenbone portage. Years ago you paddled a bit up the creek, but they lengthened it to the dock due to nesting loons I believe--the map has never been clear since. Smart move being ca...

Re: Lake Ritchie Algae Bloom

That could mess up some canoe trips, esp if it spreads to other lakes and lasts. We'll be sticking to Superior waters next week, so should be OK.

Also, I wonder to what extent it affects Chippewa Harbor? I'm guessing not much, but I wouldn't be getting water near the creek.

Re: Bathing

I think covering up is the norm. Odds are pretty low that you'll be alone, and it's not necessarily "all adults"--there are scout troops, camp groups, and families.

Good to hear from you zims! Hope you had a great trip and so cool you got the grandkids out. A trip report is coming soon, right ;)? Doing my final packing and will be pointing the car and canoe that way in one week.

Re: Boiling + filtering = too much?

Most folks (and I) filter only with a good .2 micron or better filter. The "+ treat" seems to be an abundance of caution on the part of the NPS. Boiling alone will kill about anything that would harm you, but most opt for the convenience of a filter--gravity systems are particularly handy....

Re: Baggage Handling on the Ranger

I'm sure you could, but not sure that I would, just because I'd worry that it may leak if too much were loaded (or dropped) on top of it. If you're heading down the Rock Harbor trail (as opposed to the Tobin Harbor trail), it goes through the campground and there are a couple spigots there you could...

Re: How early to arrive for the Queen Departure

An hour is plenty. They should drop you off right at the dock. Just curious though, don't they tell you on the ticket or when you booked?

Re: Gear / Bugs May 21-26

What torpified said. I always bring a headnet. The only thing that varies is how much bug dope I carry, which will be plenty for my mid-June trip.

Try Copper Country Limo https://coppercountrylimo.com/. It's not clear from the website if they're operating or not.

Re: Rock Harbor gas question

I suggest calling the park service office in Houghton and/or the concessionaire (Rock Harbor Lodge). You could also try the Facebook group, I think there's some current and former employees that follow that and may know.

Re: [Tool] Isle Royale Trip Planner Spreadsheet

I think it should be good now. You will need to delete what you have and copy the public version again. Thanks for pointing it out and please let me know if you still have issues or find anything else. FYI, there were a couple behind the scenes, hidden elements where I misspelled Pickerel as Pickera...

Re: [Tool] Isle Royale Trip Planner Spreadsheet

Updated link that forces you to make a copy first (which is required to use). Again, note that you need a Google account to use, since it resides on Google Drive/Sheets. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1M5z4xI_lLuMRGxmB8PKP8NUMV4xk378xXvfthsaUsp0/copy I realize this spreadsheet has been up f...

Re: Venture crew group trip

Getting really excited for the trip, another question... What trail maps are out there? Is the nat geo the go to map? I have not really found anything else online. I want to get a Back up for our group and it is good to have another type sometimes for comparisons. The Nat Geo map is the standard. T...

Re: Rain, Rain – Go Away

If you look at the tarp pic in this thread, that day the WHOLE shelter would have been wet without the tarp! Note the soaked floor in front of the door viewtopic.php?t=3067
Also good to have extra cord, as the tarp was still flopping with all those lines across it.
