Re: MN moose could be gone in a decade

I didnt notice this post until today, and I just read the story...
I love moose so much, but it sounds like this may be something humans can't really mitigate. At least they could stop the hunting completely, although if the problem is climate-related, I'm not sure how much that would help.

Re: Seeking advice re headnet / bug screen

I disagree. I find DEET to be very effective against all pesky insects.

Re: Critque/Suggestions of our itinerary

My friends and I stayed at Wood Lake last year and I saw a beaver there. I got up just after dawn and walked down to the rocky point that you come around when you first approach the landing. I stood very still and just waited and after a bit the beaver came gliding around the point. I got to hear ...

Re: Camping near Houghton, MI

Regarding camping, a couple of years in a row John Dunn had those of us meeting to go on the service trip via the Ranger meet up at McClain State Park and stay in one of their cabins. It was very plain but very clean, a nice big one-room cabin with plenty of bed platforms and an outhouse for ...

Re: how to get to grand marais from duluth?

I thought I heard a rumor last year that the seaplane was going to add an option of flying to/from Duluth, but I don't see it on their website. Was that just a rumor, then? It sure would add options for those of us who have to fly in to our jumping off point.

Re: From the IRKPA Facebook Page

I have done 3 work trips in Tobin Harbor with John Dunn (as well as a couple elsewhere on the island.) In Tobin Harbor he will have access to the gas fridge at the Artist-in-Residence cabin, so the food is not just freeze-dried backpacking fare; you have the luxury of things like cold milk, and ...

Re: Route Check for a 1st Timer

Moose encounters are hard to predict, but Washington Creek should be a safe bet. I didn't see any at Rock Harbor this year, despite looking faithfully in past moose encounter spots. Bear in mind that moose hate heat, and their definition of "heat" is pretty mild by human standards. So look for them ...

Re: What has caused the decline in the beaver population?

I think part of it is the maturation of the forest; I think beaver like young trees. Once a ranger told me a forest fire would help the beaver population. Which would in turn help the moose population, as they like to browse in beaver ponds. I also think that when moose get scarcer, wolves will eat ...

Re: Houghton Hotels and getting to Houghton from CMX

Hi Philly Girl, I live in Lancaster, PA and I have been coming to Isle Royale via CMX for years. It may seem pricey to some (about $100 a night) but for my money, you simply can't beat the Best Western Franklin Square Inn. You are literally right at the Ranger III dock, so in the morning you just ...

Lift Bridge Stuck Briefly in Houghton

The article says the Ranger had to dock on the other side of the bridge to unload passengers returning from the island while the Downtowner Lounge enjoyed three hours of sudden popularity.

Re: Animals Anyone?????

There certainly could be a second cow around, so maybe the little gimpy one is hanging in there. Maybe someone will see the twins again and be kind enough to post here to update.

Re: Animals Anyone?????

Although I hope for the best for the second little calf, this sounds like bad news to me. This cow and her two calves have been at Washington Creek all summer, and now you say you only saw one... The second calf's limp was very pronounced when we saw it July 22/23 and it was having a great deal of ...

Re: Animals Anyone?????

The key to animal observation is to get up at what my friend calls "oh-dark-thirty" and to walk quietly without speaking. Moose suffer greatly from heat and will not be visible much during the day. I go on moose patrol at dawn every morning when I am on the island and saw six moose on this trip: one ...

How fortunate we are to have Tampico to tell us what to eat for lunch.
And here I thought I could eat whatever sounded good to me. Which would not be tuna. Under any circumstances.

Re: Entering the Copper Mines

The sites I've seen in the Rock Harbor area are just big collapsed sink holes, very boring to me. The mine site by McCargoe Cove is much more impressive, but I don't recall that there's much of a shaft to explore. I went there on an evening hike from McCargoe with friends who were more interested in ...
