Limited Edition Isle Royale Maps

Some of you may have heard of MN artist/cartographer Keith Mymrel, who has produced wall-worthy maps of the MN Boundary Waters and other regional areas. He has recently released Isle Royale, with 300 available signed and numbered. Now that I've ordered my own, I'll share the link in case others migh...

Re: Windigo name

Indeed, from The Place Names of Isle Royale : Windigo is a variation of an Indian word for a mythical monster which roamed the woods of the North Country to consume humans. What the book doesn't mention, but is fun to show kids and adults alike: Flip your map upside down; Feldtmann Lake is the eye, ...

Re: Windigo side new gift shop/restaurant

I don't think it will have a restaurant, per se; probably just food options like the previous store did. I doubt it will be like RH in that capacity, perhaps due to staffing. When I was there this August it looked to be getting close to completion; it's much larger than the previous little shop on t...

Moskey Basin listed as Top 10 NPS Campsite

The Jan/Feb 2021 issue of Backpacker Magazine has a feature on the top 10 National Park Campsites. Moskey Basin made the cut... and for good reason. There goes our secret!

Re: Venture crew group trip

Welcome! The Greenstone Ridge is the dominate ridge trail on the island; it's also very common to be used by scout groups looking to get their 50-miler, as that can be accomplished with a little side trail action. It's also group friendly. (On Isle Royale, groups are 7-10 campers.) If you're looking...

Re: Intermediate and Lake Richie Algae Bloom 2020

The only surprise is that it took this long. It's been a dang warm year in the area (and sunny), and many of these lakes have witnessed blooms in the past, so I was waiting for when the report would come in. I had the opportunity to get in a little trip/fishing this past weekend (TR to come, eventua...

Re: Trip Report: Aug 6-13, 2020

Thanks for the TR. After a good number of years and trips, Feldtmann #2 remains my single favorite camp site on the Isle. I don't think it can get any better. That stretch from Siskiwit to Feldtmann seems to get thicker by the year; in many ways it's harder route finding than the Minong for a stretc...

It's also showing the lights of a boat or two over-nighting at the dock, I'm assuming due to the closure of the marina. Morning light shows the Ranger III sitting at the dock. Must be dropping off some supplies. RangerAtRockHarbor.PNG (the people who run the park? the people who run IRKPA?) If you'...

Re: Isle Royale Webcams

The Tobin Harbor camera must also be a PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) model, since either it got knocked by the wind, or I'm seeing more of Rock Harbor (and a little bit of Snug Harbor, by the looks of it) than before. Good times! Edit: And... it's moved back. Apparently the game is to see how often someone tw...

Re: Park Closing again in August? Fact or Rumor?

I have not heard of anything, but it does appear there is a change on August 11th of some sort. On both the fuel page (https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/boat-fuel.htm) and resort section of the general FAQ (https://www.nps.gov/isro/planyourvisit/covid-19-general-park-faq.htm) they mention chang...

Re: Pontoon boat

It would be interesting, for sure. I think wind (and how pontoons just love to glide sideways) might be an issue if near the shore, of course, but being careful is what it's about. I've often thought some day about bringing out a Grumman square stern Sportboat/canoe to the Isle. Not entirely practic...
