Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help
Rock Harbor is a very large campground, with easy access from the Ranger's dock. There's a 1-night stay limit at most times, so be sure to consider that in your planning. Like all Isle Royale campgrounds, it's actually a collection of separate tent sites (and some shelters), and in busy seasons peo...

Re: Trip Planning: Itinerary Help
If we take the Ranger III, we will be there for 4 nights. We would head over on Tuesday and come back on Saturday. The short time budget has me thinking about the best loop for what my kids can handle. Perhaps we could take a water taxi to Moskey Basin on Tuesday (weather permitting), to give us a c...

Trip Planning: Itinerary Help
My family is planning a trip to the east end of the island in June 2024. We will probably be taking the Ranger III out of Houghton. If that's the case, it appears we won't get in to Rock Harbor until 3pm. Is it possible to get a campsite at Threemile that first night? Or will it be filled up? My kid...

Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like
Johnhens, I've read some cool things about Dry Tortugas and would love to get down there. It looks like a neat park even if it isn't very big.

Re: Anyone interested in creating a resource website?
I would not mind helping out with the page. I've done some html work, and would be interested in getting the word out for Isle Royale. I read what your thoughts were, but what specific information were you thinking should be on there?

Re: What are your winter plans?
I often spend my winter planning for my next trip. It's fun to research the different parks and hikes.
I still do get out to hike, but it's less often with the snow on the ground.

Re: Water Taxi
Is it possible to fly in and out of Daisy Farm? You'll not have to worry about a water taxi and you can spend more time where you want to be.

Re: Affordable Lightweight Tent?
I have the REI Halfdome and have been very happy with it's performance. I've used it at Grand Canyon, Isle Royale, Sleeping Bear (N. Manitou), Cumberland Island and a couple of other places and it's worked great. It's reasonable in price, has a decent amount of room (I'm over 6'), two doors and two ...

I've been reading it over the last few days. Can't wait to see what news they get about the wolf packs.

Re: Backpacker Magazine (Jan 2011) - The Secret is Out!
It's always nice to have IR featured in Backpacker. As much as I don't want IR to be crowded, it would be nice for more people to check it out.

Re: Getting married. Need help...
You will also need to get the marriage license from the county you are getting married in (30 days or less before the wedding). I think IR is technically part of Keweenaw County. When I was out at Grand Canyon, there were pastors in the parks who did weddings quite frequently for a very reasonable s...

Re: MPLS Star Trib editorial on eviction notices to leashold
Here is an article from a NW Indiana newspaper about the "eviction" of residents from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Indiana Dunes is quite a bit different than Isle Royale, but it's still an interesting story none the less. http://www.post-trib.com/news/2576126,new-dunesmove0808.ar...

Summer Vacation
My wife and I just got back from our trip out west. While in California we went to Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Each park was really beautiful and fun to hike (we didn't backpack). As you can imagine, Yosemite was really touristy, but still had a lot of cool things to see. King...
