Re: First IR visit, planning on doing the Greenstone Ridge T
Yes you can take the Voyager II from Rock Harbor to Windigo, or many other points on the island. Just make sure you make reservations so you’re on the Voyagers roster. They can often have a full boat from Rock Harbor to Windigo. I have always traveled from Minnesota, so never worry about the Queen. ...

Re: Breakfast ideas
I usually eat breakfast on the trail. I have tried many different granola bars, energy bars and GORP mixes. I discovered the PROBAR is the best and is what I take for every breakfast. It satisfies me and fills me up. My favorite is the SUPERFOOD SLAM PROBAR. Wow that just sounded like a commercial ...

Shelter Graffiti
Although I do not condone it, however we all read the writings and look at the drawings in the shelters. Sometimes they can be very entertaining. What was your favorite?

Re: First Trip to the Island
Welcome What are food portions for each day per person? I usually take 1 ¾ to 2 pounds of food per day or 3500 calories. I also look at the protein in the food and take meals with the highest protein. 120 to 150 g of protein per day. What will the bugs be like at this time? Some say the bugs are ...

Re: What Else Do I Need?
This is starting to sound like a dirty jobs episode. I will continue to use the latrine provided by the Park Service. When the Park Service decides it is not a good idea to @#$% in a pit, I will have to change.

Re: Backpacking Lunch
I usually do not have a lunch on the trail. However I do eat smaller amounts along the trail. I eat GORP or jerky, whatever I have along with me. I also carry a small bottle of honey for extra energy.

Re: Music Playlist for Isle Royale
Looks like you have watched the movie Into The Wild. Possibly most on this forum have. I will add: Guaranteed Long Nights No Ceiling. I wish I had a soundtrack of the island to listen to when not there. You know the sound of loons at dusk and maybe some water trickling or slapping the shore. I ...

They are also collapsible. I only use mine for extra water storage, and in camp. During long waterless stretches of trail I fill my bladder. When not in use they take little room to store.

Re: waterproof boots
I have a pair of REI Spirit III hiking boots. They do have Gore-tex, and they work great. However if it is raining I found that my wicking socks wick water into the boot (an unexpected amount). So I try to tuck my socks in (so that they are not exposed) or wear a gaiter to keep the bottom cuffs of ...

Re: Water filtration
I never have boil or chemically treated drinking water from the Island. I do like to us a ceramic filter though, much easier to service/clean. We also use a collapsible bucket to pump water out of, after the first trip to the Island standing in cold water in the morning pumping through clogged ...

You have me wondering what you are up to!
I also found this picture of Windigo.

I was a bit surprised to see the Visitor center down by the water. How long has the new visitor center been up on the hill?
