No Soap?

During my August 11 trip, at LNT orientation the Ranger asked the group if anyone had camp soap. When several of us said we did, she said it couldn't be used; to only use plain water to wipe out cooking utensils, etc. We only used water on our trip for cleaning per Ranger instructions. Today I check...

Re: The Bugs?

Just returned from an August 11-14th trip. I opted to try a repellent other than my 3m ultrathon lotion (a longtime effective favorite). I tried a cutter brand 'non-deet' spray. Big mistake for me...while the permethrin spray I sprayed on my clothing kept the bugs away from what I was wearing, they ...

Re: The Perseid Meteor Shower Is Coming - peaking 8/11-8/12

My daughter & I were on the island August 11-14. The evening of the 12th at Daisy Farm...after midnight I did see a few meteors on a necessity trip to the latrine.

Re: Shelter locations - table?

A new discovery for me this year on my August 11-14th trip...Daisy Farm now has 22 shelters. And after my hike from Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm via the Tobin Harbor trail & the Greenstone, I was plenty greatful for that shelter!

Re: who out there?

In the past I've carried a "pop-can" backup stove and a few ounces of denatured alcohol in a plastic bottle. No moving parts, nothing to break, and it does the job. Most recent trip (a few weeks ago) I didn't carry a backup; used an MSR dragonfly & two fuel canisters. I too always carr...

August 11-14 Scoutdad & Daughter trip

Monday August 10th- Traveled from St.Ignace/Les Cheneaux area with my 14 year daughter and arrived safely in Copper Harbor. Only detour was stopping at Gander Mountain in Marquette for her new Nalgene bottle. Disappointed they didn't have a pink bottle (go figure  ), she settled for blue. Che...

Re: Are these good sites?

Ucity: You might look at hiking to Land Cove via the Tobin Harbor to the Mt. Franklin Trail then take the Lane Cove Trail to the campsite (no shelters there). Day two, back up the Lane Cove trail then South on the Mt. Franklin trail (beautiful view from Mt. Franklin) to 3 Mile campground (shelters a...

Re: Restaurant in Copper Harbor area??

The Tamarack is good food for a good price, our scouts on our last trip loved their pasties and broasted chicken.

Harbor Haus is for sure very tasty as well, and little more expensive.

Re: Speaking of Food

I recently tried dehydrating deli ham. Cut in slices, it was easy to add to different one pot meals, and in the morning it's like crispy bacon. :) The directions are here...a great website... http://www.backpackingchef.com/dehydrating-meat.html I made the 'pumpkin pie' fruit leather/bark from this w...

Re: Water treatment?

I filtered and chemicallty treated on my 2004 trip, but only because it was a scout trip, and if a scout got sick for ANY reason, I didn't want the parents to think the leaders didn't do everything to keep their kids healthy. Normally though, just filtering is fine.

Re: 8 Day Solo - Minong - Greenstone Loop

Hi Plowhorse: I gotta agree with Nick; slow it down and enjoy! My scout troop was on the Island in 2004, the older boys group "just had to" earn their Fifty Miler patch (in 4 days) on IR. I told them they would regret the pace. All made it, but most failed to enjoy their days, exhausted an...
