Re: Permethrin???

I've used Permethrin on my clothing for my last 4 backpacking trips. Not for use directly on skin, but ok to treat clothing. Sawyer Products makes a spray Insect Repellent for Clothing that worked great for me...they also have a new "soaking product" that looks more effective/thorough. Her...

Re: Help with Itinerary

Sounds like Lane Cove should be in your plans; very peaceful (no shelters though) and near the trail head gives you a great opportunity to see the view from Mt. Franklin.

Re: Todd Harbor, or Lane Cove?

Lane Cove is quiet and serene, but quite a climb on the way back to the Greenstone.

Re: shelter vs. tent sites

I chased a squirrel away from our gear once...and have read other posts about them chewing through a backpack, but that's it.

Re: Windigo Store

I've not been to Windigo, but on my previous trips from Rock Harbor the store there was alot like a mini-mart with the addition of camping supplies & gifts. I recall that you could buy eggs, milk, ground beef, bacon, and If I remember correctly steak?! Pricey though; as posted before, there is a ...

Re: First time Isle Royale visit.

What was your cellular carrier? In 2001 I had verizon, and got a clear signal from Thunder Bay; however on that trip I hadn't activated intl. roaming with my provider. In 2004 I used Cincinnati Bell, which I believe uses AT&T towers when roaming in the USA. The signal was strong, and I complete...

Re: UP state bird

3m Ultrathon worksgreat for me.

Also, spraying permethrin on your clothing repels the skeeters as well. Sawyer makes a pre mixed aerosol permethrin spray, but I found a bottle of the straight stuff at Cabella's in Dundee and mix it elf. The permethrin lasts through 2 to 3 washings.

In 2004 I got cell service from the Greenstone in the area of Mt. Ojibway...It was international roaming out of Thunder Bay, Ont. You can always rent a sat. phone for a week....several companies online.

Re: Compass for trail hiking

The "Scout" in me says a compass is always a must; however the only time I used mine was with my son in 2001 when he got turned around on the Tobin Harbor trail. After a rest stop on the way from Rock Harbor to Lane Cove , he insisted we were correct in walking east on the trail. Orienting...

Re: food help on first trip

A ziplock bag filled w/cereal and a measured amount of carnation instant milk is a breakfast favorite of mine...quick and no cleanup except your spoon. Write the amount of water you need to add to hydrate the milk on the bag with a sharpie pen. For lunch, a hard cheese like parmesean (stays good for...

Fee-Free Weekends on IR

I found a link about fee-free weekends at certain national parks...the weekends listed are: July 18-19, 2009 & August 15-16, 2009. Isle Royale is listed; although the info on the website mentions: The waiver does not include other fees collected in advance or by contractors—such as fees charged ...

Re: Huge Blisters 6 days before going to Isle Royale

Ditto on Philranger's suggestion...pre-treating the spots is the way to go. And take lots of opportunities to let the blisters air dry if you can.
