Re: TR: 5/25 - 6/2, 2019 [Windigo to Rock Harbor + Day Hikes!]

Day 4: Tuesday, 5/28 [McCargoe Cove -> Moskey Basin]: The sunrise bathed the landscape in beautiful golden light this morning, which I could not resist photographing prior to taking off for the day. For a moment, I wished I had my big camera to record the beauty, but my legs were undoubtedly ...

Re: chief54 first 2019 images

It appears that you are the gentleman we ran into at Daisy Farm pier on 6/2. Nice to chat with you and to get a chance to see your work. Fantastic pics.

We were the family of 4 (en route from Moskey Basin) that stopped there in a canoe for a snack and a run to the privy.

Cheers!

Re: Washington Creek first night?

The hardest part of that hike from Windigo to N. Desor is the last few miles. I don't know your conditioning but give yourself plenty of time and be ready.

Re: Where to stay?

We saw several of them at Lake Ojibway in May of '16 and '17 from the tower. We did not get within view of the lake this year but heard a few young guys say they bushwhacked down to Lake Ojibway and spent an afternoon watching moose come and go. Lots of them.

Re: BUGS!

Having been to island many times I can say that several of those trips could have been ruined had we not brought headnets. Many trips I have never used them and several trips I haven't used them except once or twice. But when you need them, you really need them.

Re: Recent trip to Zion Canyon National Park

We were just there in April. We only had 3 days to explore so there's a lot left for us to go back for. Amazing park.

Re: Shelters

Has anyone seen shelters of the Isle Royale design at any other parks or locations? We have not. Just kind of curious to know how unique they are to Isle Royale. I think I once read they are a four-sided variation of the "Adirondack lean-to" found on the Appalachian Trail in the Adirondack mountain ...

Re: June 25-30 plan

West Chickenbone to Lane Cove sounds like your toughest day but is pretty doable for most folks. I don't know you but Id be surprised if it took you 8 hrs or more. The trail out of lane Cove back to the Greenstone is the toughest shorter stretch you will see out there. It's not super hard but more ...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

Kind of a wash in my opinion. Both are very nice places to stay and have beautiful views. Chippewa is likely to have fewer people but, in my experience, it has a higher likelihood of having boaters/yachts staying over at the pier. They are generally quiet and courteous but we did have one run a ...

Re: Portage Distance

Having done this portage a few weeks ago I can confirm the 1.2mi length. Seeing the stream in a few places along the way one has to wonder how this portage was ever any shorter, but the island is ever changing. After putting in at Chickenbone Lake there are still a few downed trees in the water ...

Re: Feldtmann Loop Fishing

Does anyone have any idea of the kind of fish you can catch in Siskiwit Bay? Any tips on spots to go besides the dock? I have bushwhacked to Halloran and the pike fishing was fast and furious. I fished the NW side of the lake and literally had a follow or caught a pike on every cast using Miller ...
