Re: Towing in Rock Harbor

The Peterson's invited us over the next day after their presentation (at Daisy Farm) on a Wednesday. We were able to see their collection of animal skulls, etc. across the Harbor from Daisy Farm. Followed that up with a visit to the Fishery and Lighthouse nearby.

Re: The Isle Royale Curse

I guess I've been blessed, as some say, or as I say, "I've been lucky" and have had pleasant trips. That includes one trip where I got to Daisy Farm, it started to rain and didn't stop for about 48 hours, plus another trip where I waited at Rock Harbor for two days in August for a ride on the Queen ...

Oftentimes, the earlier you get to a campsite, a site might be available for your use.

Re: Minnesota, Grand Portage & Minong Questions

In Grand Marais there is a grocery store. As you come into the downtown area there'll be a traffic light. The store is on the left within a block or two after the light.

Re: Rock Harbor - 3 Mile - Daisy - Lane Cove - Rock Harbor : August 2016

If you want to avoid crowds, I would suggest going to the western half of ISRO NP. During July a few years ago, I went about 30 hours without seeing or talking to another person. (Yes, I talk to myself.)

Re: Minong Ridge - good idea?

JerryB is correct, you could learn a lot from reading some of the trip reports. If you are going from east to west, JerryB's comment is true. I was with a very experience person with survival training and we got lost right after the beaver dam crossing. If its not raining as it was for us, the Minon...

Thanks! Love the picture. P.S. I enjoyed the time you spent with me at the Daisy Farm dock discussing stuff. Hope you and your family and your brother-in-law's family have a nice holiday season. Thanks again for the water you gave me. jerry (the old one)

Re: Advice sought: is my itinerary too conservative?

Grebe,
I had a bad back when I started backpacking. I seldom have issues anymore thanks to trips to places like Isle Royale for at least an annual trip. Never see a doc about the back at all. Carrying 25 to 35 pounds has really helped me.

Re: Tree incident at Hatchet Lake

I spoke with one of the rangers that helped to evacuate these two young ladies, the day after the incident/accident. He was checking my permit at Daisy Farm. He told me he was up for almost 24 hours, due to the rescue process. I guess the Coast Guard flew them out from the north side of the island. ...

Terry, Hope to hear that you make it back next year to IR. I've got a few years on you (12),therefore, I know how good it feels to make it to the grill for the sandwich and beer. IR is definitely a pleasant place to visit. Thanks for the report.

Re: Washington Creek Rain Event Levels

There were no issues at Moskey B, Daisy F or 3mile. I just got back from there. I sat out (woke up during the storm) in shelter 2 at Moskey B. The storm (T.S) started at about 9 and went until about 4 a.m. It was a hard rain with lots of wind.
