Re: Trekking Poles

I normally use one of the pair I have because it hurts like hell to slip fall down.

Re: What am I forgetting

If you plan to visit Windigo I recommend a cork that will stopper a 1 3/4" hole so you can prewash stuff in the laundry room sink. (In which case some liquid laundry soap is a good idea too.) Anymore, I always carry a piece of light visqueen or a large garbage bag or light disposable poncho just in ...

Re: Travel Size Food, Spreads, Condiments

This is my favorite "travel size" spread. No experience with this site, just Googled it as an example.

Re: Transporting Boardwalks

I can visualize those canoes folding up in the middle, like a leaf. I guess they're heavy-duty canoes.

Re: Tarptent Double Rainbow?

Their Cloudburst 3 reminds me a lot of a medium Stephenson tent.

Re: Len Foote Hike Inn

For those that "don't like" can they roll over and go back to sleep (after cursing the drummer under their breath)? A drum is not as annoying as you might expect. Not a snare-drum, more like a tom-tom. You can easily ignore it. How far is, "not far" from Springer? 4.8 miles from the southern...

Re: Liquid fuel stove vs cannister stove

IMHO the Zen Stove site still has the best comparison's of backpacking stoves. http://zenstoves.net/

Len Foote Hike Inn

I spent a night at the Len Foote Hike Inn in N. Georgia, not far from the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mtn. The Hike Inn is somewhat of a hybrid between a mountain lodge and a Holiday Inn. The guests must hike at least 4.8 miles from the parking to to get there but the inn ...

Re: Tarptent Double Rainbow?

One thing about single-wall tents is that you want them to have more or less vertical walls, so that you don't tend to brush up against the walls a lot. I'd like to get a better look at the peak vents on that tent but the fact that they are included is a good sign.

Re: Nat Geo Topo quads

Older maps were works of art. New maps are works of computer. I used to hang charts and maps on my walls because they were so beautiful to looks at. I remember talking to a NOAA cartographer who described the painstaking work of charting hundreds of individual pilings with a drop-compass. Anyway, US...

I've cooked in a shelter; only on a cold, rainy, miserable day.

Re: Denatured alcohol availability on Isle Royale

If they don't allow fuel alcohol one can always pack a fifth of Everclear but you might not be able to buy it in Michigan.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2017 Edition

I forgot I had a dividend until I stopped at the REI store in Knoxville and bought some long underpants. With the 20% off and dividend I walked out of the store with a $59 (outrageously overpriced) underwear for a reasonable $32.

Re: LeConte Lodge

LeConte Lodge for many years has had a system like season ticket holders for sports teams, they have a group of guests who have reserved the same dates for over 20 years. There are called "grandfathered" reservations because in 1998 the Park Service said they had to end the program in 20 years. 2018...

Re: Powdered Peanut Butter

When figuring your backpacking diet, peanut butter is normally considered an oil. PB2 is peanut butter with the oil removed. Not sure how that would be figured. As a mix of protein and starch by dry weight?
