Re: Boat options from Grand Portage to Rock Harbor

You can book a charter boat for a fishing expedition but I almost certainly doubt they are allowed to simply ferry you to/from Rock Harbor Lodge. Commercial enterprises are strictly controlled by the federal government (NPS and Coast Guard) and they are licenced for specific purposes. Plus it would ...

Re: Chippewa Harbor or Moskey Basin

The hike from Ritchie to Moskey (and back the next day) is really not that bad (it can be a canoe portage) and the extra time is worth the camp, IMHO. I totally agree Tom. The 2.5 miles from Mosky to Ritchie is pretty flat and quite easy by Island standards, especially given it's location. But it y...

I use Acme Mapper in Topo mode.
Thanks for the online mapper. I used to use one but it's not as good as Acme.
I notice the topo map loaded is showing 2 Feldtman trails. The Eastern one was abandoned quite some time ago. I'm sure most of it is under water now as that area had many boardwalks.

Definitely strawberry, Ingo. No contest!

As far as choosing a campground, the above posts layout your choices very well, if anything matches your tastes. Otherwise flip a coin as you can't go wrong either way.

The fishing was indeed, great. I would definitely go back more prepared for a longer stay.
What species of fish were you catching?

Re: First time to Isle Royale

One more question, I've read a little about "backcountry camping" on the island and i'm a little confused by what people are saying in some of the threads.. Are the campsites I'm hiking to not backcountry campsites? Or is the backcountry camping referring to going off the trail and setting up camp ...

Re: Ranger question (and bonus pasty query)

Pastys were originally created and adopted as the dinner meal for miners, first by the Cornish in the UK and then by the Finns and others in the UP. It's basically a meat pot pie but all self contained, sort of resembling a Pop-Tart, except it's thick and plump. The miners would wrap them in a napki...

Re: May 2018 McCargo-Daisy-Moskey-Chippewa

I think we have a tendency to drink less water than we need causing various degrees of dehydration. One of the biggest symptoms is loss of appetite. You are spot on. Three years ago I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in Death Valley. It was winter so the temperatures were mild, but the...

Re: Windigo Cabins

I've often wondered how the NPS concessions are setup and regulated. I found this document on the NPS website. You might try contacting the parent company of the Rock Harbor Lodge concessions, called Forever Resorts. They manage dozens of resort properties for national parks, state parks and private...

I just scrolled through our pics and can't believe there aren't any action shots.
I just assumed that maybe it was because Jason always got so far ahead of you before you could get the camera out.

That rugged point and shoot deserves a hard look, next time I'm looking.

Re: May 2018 First Boat Runcation (West side)

I loved your prose and pictures, but I must point out that I did not see a single photo of anyone running or even moving fast, just say'in, LOL. All levity aside, your pictures of the flora and landscape are great. Too bad the fauna did not cooperate better. What kind of camera do you carry? Since y...

There should be 2 imprints of melted frost created by 2 frozen butt cheeks. Time for photoshop.

Re: Where to spend a day?

Here's some Greenstones. I enjoy sitting on a beach and sifting through the pebbles looking for them, but always throw them back in the water. As Ed said, it's illegal to keep them. That's a mighty nice one in the center there. I have a full 35 mm film canister collected from the 1970's, before the...

Re: Where to spend a day?

Make sure you do your homework. Even on somewhat calm days and armed with the best nautical chart, shoals just under the surface can present great danger. Add into that some wave action and the uncertainty goes way up. I would want a good GPS with preset waypoints marked on a chart and maybe even a ...
