Re: Possible Itinerary and Dates - Feedback?

Your revised itinerary looks a lot better. Rock Harbor to Moskey would be a very long first day with full packs. When doing the stretch from Rock Harbor to Daisy Farm, take the Tobin Harbor trail instead of the Rock Harbor trail to Three Mile. It is a bit longer, but much easier and faster. You can ...

Re: Itinerary Advice for July 2017

Looks like a very doable itinerary. I personally like going East to West as the west end has less people and I feel like I am going "into the wild". I will second Tom on both Island Mine and Huginnin Cove. I love Island Mine campground in the fall, but would avoid it in July. Huginnin Cove is beauti...

Re: Backcountry zone 27

Once you are at Ishpeming Point, the hardest part of your hike is done. I have found that the hike down from there to Malone goes very fast (at double the speed) because it is all downhill. The slowest part is the wetlands and boards at the west end of the lake near the stream. As Tom said, just pas...

Re: McCargoe to Malone

I agree with all of the previous information, but would emphasize John's warning about Siskiwit Lake. There are numerous days when this lake cannot be safely paddled. I have been stuck at Wood Lake campground for 2 days unable to leave due to lake conditions. Since this is the last leg of your trip,...

Isle Royale Cultural Resources Site from Michigan Tech

I have never seen this site before and do not recall it being posted here before.

I have just spent the last couple of hours going through it and found it full of great information and pictures. If you like history, this is a must see.

It is at:

Re: Submissions for PICTURE OF THE WEEK go here

Here are some pictures from the cabin in 2001 before restoration. A lot of the items now inside the cabin were laying around the area and were moved inside. There were and still are chards of pottery in the water and crib remains. My favorite items then were the jars on the shelf. Comparing the pict...

Re: Minong Ridge - good idea?

In my opinion, the Minong is the ultimate trail to hike on the island for wilderness. The Greenstone is the classic Isle Royale hike. When is the last time your Dad has hiked?? Has he done the Greenstone?? Those questions would help in a further response. As said by others, you cannot get terribly l...

Re: TR: 9/28-10/6, 2016 [Paddling Malone Bay-Hay Bay-Siskiwit Bay]

I just did a quick search on the Kestrel 3500, very interesting. I did not read a lot on it, but it looks like it would be a cool gadget to have (book marked). It would be cool to have humidity. The thing that immediately grabbed my attention is current wind speed, average wind speed, maximum wind g...

Re: TR: 9/28-10/6, 2016 [Paddling Malone Bay-Hay Bay-Siskiwit Bay]

This trip I used a Speedtech Instruments Eco Edge. It displays the temperature and current barometer reading. It also shows the barometric history for the last 16 hours in the form of a bar graph with four columns representing 16, 8, 4, and 2 hours ago. The barometer is calibrated by entering longit...

Re: Submissions for PICTURE OF THE WEEK go here

This is a picture from one of the placards in the displays inside of Rock Harbor Lighthouse. It did not say where is was docked.

I do not know if it is true, but I heard Holger Johnson "accidently" beached the boat when he was mad at the park service.

No land speed records for sure. I am planning an every other day trip. Walk, stay a day, walk, stay a day, etc. That is pretty much the way I approach trips these days. Allows you to soak it all in. Packs, hopefully <40 pounds (not counting video/audio equipment) and no canoe (45 pounds).

This is a condensed version of the journal I wrote while on the island. There are a couple of videos from this trip posted on the website at: http://www.isleroyale.info/irtube.html Of note: my Dad was to turn 80 years old on October 12th!! Day One - Wednesday: Grand Portage to Isle Royale on the Voy...

Ingo, thanks for the report! Lake Superior can be so fickle. Sounds like you did a great job adjusting to the conditions.
We always bring a backup gravity filter when paddling or hiking. Very small and lightweight.

Re: Old Trails

Back from the island with a follow up on looking for this trail... We searched for the Lake Halloran trail with no luck. I marked the 2 GPS points I had that were based on the only two maps I had. Neither one of these were topo maps so, they were only approximations. However, based on the terrain in...
