Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

Very impressive amount of ice on Lake Superior this winter. And with more sub-zero temps in forecast for next week, it won’t be going anywhere soon. I’ll be curious as how the predicted winds will rearrange things the next few days. They’re predicting gusts as high as 50mph.

Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

I just noticed on the "Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks" Facebook group that Rolf Peterson reports an ice bridge between Isle Royale and the mainland has existed in some form since January 25th.

Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

I recall reading many years back that the researchers reported seeing snowmobile tracks coming from the mainland. I’m guessing this would be back in the 1970’s. Not sure where I saw this though. If there was ever a winter for an ice bridge to form, this would have been the year. A friend told me tha...

Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

Don, do you ice fish just around Grand Portage? Or do you head farther east? It sure looks like far NE Isle Royale was the place to be this year for any sort of prolonged ice bridge to the mainland. The new 8 -14 day forecast came out yesterday showing a dramatic warmup in store for the Great Lakes ...

Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

I don't understand the letters or numbers on these ice charts either. I mainly look at the colors to see where the good ice is. According to the latest info, it sure looks like there's a good bit of thick ice between the Sleeping Giant and NE Isle Royale. For several days now too. And the 8 -14 day ...

Latest ice chart (2-8-2014) from the Canadians. Look at the bottom for an explanation as to the colors:

Re: Lake Superior frozen: Anyone walking to Isle Royale? :)

No doubt this is the winter to view the ice caves at the Apostle Islands and the rock formations at Pictured Rocks. As for Isle Royale, I'l pass on skiing to the island. I'm quite content to read the latest from the ongoing moose study. I do recall reading that back in the 1970's people had snomobil...

Re: Making kayaking on Supperior look like childs play

You should read the book "Alone at Sea," which chronicles Hannes Lindemann's solo-paddle across the Atlantic Ocean in the mid-1950's. He actually did it twice, once in a dugout canoe, and the other in Klepper folding kayak. An absolutely fascinating read.

Re: Winter study

I'm curious too. I've been watching the MODIS imagery daily (looking at the ice bridge forming) and the past several days have been clear (and cold). So you think flying there wouldn't be a problem. Maybe they're just very busy.

Re: Middle Island to Chippewa

It took us about three hours to paddle from Daisy Farm to Chippewa Harbor several years back. Southwest winds hitting us in the face the entire way. We saw choppy seas but not terribly big waves. I was in a Klepper double while my buddy was in a hardshell. Because of the chop, we learned that the ea...

Re: Solid ice from IR to Canada

The ice is changing constantly (wind!). The latest MODIS image (1-7-2014) shows a markedly different ice bridge from what you saw a few days earlier. The Canadians have an excellent ice-condition website that is update daily. Go here to see what Lake Superior looks like as of Monday, January 6th: ht...

Re: Kayak trip question

I've kayaked these waters many times. Actually, I kind of like your "water taxi to Belle Isle" idea. Going to Belle Isle direct when you first arrive, will give you more time to explore the Five Fingers area as well as some time to play the weather for your journey back to Rock Harbor around Blake P...

Re: First boat

I was watching the weather radar yesterday (5/2) and it looks like it snowed almost the entire day over some parts of the island. To have knee-deep snow on the ground at this time in May is just amazing. Unless we got a massive warmup (which is not in the forecast), green-up may not happen until Jun...

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Thanks for the input and clarification Captain Don. It's always good to get first-hand knowledge of the ice situation. No matter what, I got to believe that we had more lake ice form this year than all of last.
