Re: An Isle Royale without wolves. Would u still visit?

Sure I would. I'm a kayaker. Isle Royale is one of the best places to kayak in all of the Great Lakes basin. The presence or absence of wolves won't change that.

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

It's amazing the difference one day can make with this ice bridge. Here's the latest as of today, Friday, March 8th. Compare with the March 7th map.

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Update as of 3/7/2013. Kind of an ice bridge, though I don't know if I'd walk on it:

Re: Map

The National Geographic topo map is a good one. You can get it from the Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association website:

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Yep, just when an ice bridge starts to form, winds break it up.

Here's the latest from the Canadian ice tracking website. As of today, 3-1-2013

Re: Hat & Camera Question

As for a camera, I'd buy something that is small, compact and water resistant. Since most of my photos are taken on the trail or at camp, I like a lens that has a zoom range that favors the wide-angle over telephoto. As for brands, they're all good so pick a camera that fits your budget. It also hel...

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Lake Superior ice conditions as of Friday, 2/22/2013. Looks like the SW part of the island may connect to Minnesota. The bad news is that the 8 - 10 day forecast is calling for higher than average temps over the Lake Superior basin. http://gallery.leica-users.org/d/346025-2/20130222121600_WIS125CT_0...

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Maximum ice coverage on Lake Superior usually occurs about March 15th. After that, the sun's increasing angle and warmer temps start the melt cycle.

Re: Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

Yeah, the map is kind of hard to figure out. You can get a good idea of the kind of ice forming by the colors. Gray is "fast ice" and is stuff that you can drive car onto. Red is the next best. The Canadians update their maps about once/week. I'll post updates as they become available. I can tell yo...

Ice Bridge Forming to Canada?

I stumbled across a Canadian website that monitors ice conditions on the Great Lakes (and the oceans). This is a map of ice coverage in lake Superior as of 2/18/2013. At least on this day, it looks like an ice bridge may be starting to connect Isle Royale to Ontario. http://gallery.leica-users.org/d...

Re: Bushwacking From Lookout Louise to Blake Point

I've never bushwhacked, but have kayaked around Blake Point several times. My observations from a kayak is that the tip of the island is incredibly rugged. Vertical drop-offs, lot of rock and a thick forest of spruce and balsam. If in a kayak and the conditions were right (calm) you could land close...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

One of my favorite spots, although not the highest on the island, is the hill behind the campsite at Chippewa Harbor. You can see a large majority of the island and lake, and it's a great place to relax. It's also a short, fun hike from Chippewa Harbor campsite........ We stumbled across the bluff ...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

.......Hey treeplanter: for that overlook on the minong, my map says there is a well in the same vicinity(also on the north side of the trail). Is it still visible/marked? I don't believe so. At least I don't recall seeing any sign indicating a well. We found this lookout quite by accident. We kaya...

Re: Where is the best panoramic view?

The best panoramic that I've personally seen is off-trail. Take the Minong Ridge trail west out of McCargoe Cove campground. Go about a 1/2 mile and you'll notice a 50" ridge immediately adjacent to the trail on the north side. Scale this ridge (easy) and you'll be greeted to a spectacular view of t...

Re: Circumnavigating Isle Royale?

"Clapotis is a term kayakers use for reflected waves combining with the incoming waves in predictable patterns causing an area of disturbed water where wave height ...". It's not a term used by canoeists because they would be swamped in such conditions. I never knew there was a fancy name for "lake...
