Re: staking out at Belle Isle

Belle Isle is best explored by boat. You can spend days paddling amongst all of the bays and inlets. Safe waters too for the most part, very little direct contact with Lake Superior, especially if you go southwest. The only trails you’ll find on Belle Isle proper, are those made by curious campers. ...

Re: Submissions for PICTURE OF THE WEEK go here

Just got back from a quick trip to the island. Cool to cold, some light rain, but basically dry. Virtually no bugs at the NE part of the island. Mainly kayaked, but some hiking too. Here's one from Mt. Franklin taken on Friday, June 2nd. Edit: The leaves on the aspen and birch were about 1/2 size an...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

Maybe somebody who lives in the western UP can comment, but I think this ice storm was pretty much limited to the higher elevations of the Porkies.

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

Latest on the Porcupine Mountains ice storm: "With 40-50 miles of the park’s roughly 90 miles of hiking trails assessed so far, 17 miles of trails have been reported in “extraordinarily” bad condition or impassible. The park also has about 26 miles of ski/mountain bike trails to be assessed. “The na...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

The Michigan DNR has been posting periodic updates on FB. An incredible amount of damage, especially for elevations greater than 1,000 feet. One inch of ice followed by several inches of snow. The Park staff really won't know how much damage was done until they walk all of the trails. But 35,000 acr...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

I wonder if the OP is still going to the Porkies in lieu of all the ice storm damage the park just experienced?

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

Woodticks like grassy areas. The top of the Escarpment Trail is open with patches of grass interspersed amongst the rock. I’m sure I picked up the woodtick when my pant leg brushed against some of this grass. You usually don’t find woodticks in the deep forest. If your hiking is mainly in the woods,...

Re: Porkies Trip Early May

As crazy as this sounds, be on the lookout for woodticks on the Escarpment trail. Three years ago, we went up to the Porkies right after the snow left. We spent the day in the old-growth (mud!), but in the evening, after supper, we took a short hike on the Escarpment Trail. I sat down on some rocks ...

Re: Guess What Campground? Chapter II.

Yep, you got it, Menagerie Island. We found an unlocked window, hoisted ourselves up through it, and explored the place. Scary and interesting at the same time. Stunning views too, from the top of the lighthouse.

Potato sausage, you're next.

Re: 2017 Spring Paddling warning

A local guy died in a nearby inland lake just last week. He went out on a terrible day, high winds and snow, with a water temp in the 30’s. We’re all try to figure out why anyone would paddle on a day like that. I went out for the first time last weekend. A small, inland lake near our home. An air t...

Re: Guess What Campground?

......Feels to me like this thread has run it's course. I think I'll let it rest for now--maybe we can pick it up later in the season with pics from this year's trips :). It has been fun! No doubt when I'm on the Island this coming season, I'll be looking to take some new campground pics that will ...

I've been here, but, like Kolo, will let somebody else answer.

I'm sure people will be able to Pick out a few clues, if they think about it.
