Rock of Ages lighthouse restoration 2018

The Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society ( RoALPS ) has started their work year on the restoring the lighthouse. The first work crew headed out to Isle Royale on 29 June 2018. For the next seven weeks, teams will go and perform restoration work. I will be on the second team, working from 7-1...

Re: Best cell signal at West end of island?

fonixmunkee, Has a web cam and network solution been arrived at yet for the Rock of Ages project? Ed, sorry for the delayed response. I lost track of some of the posts on the forum as of late. NO, we don't have a reliable web cam solution just yet. I am going to be bringing a home-built Raspberry P...

My first trip to the island did not go as planned but it was still a blast.
You definitely faced some adversity with the flooding in the UP. How did the island fair with all the rain that affected the UP?

Those two things, for some reason, really make me miss Isle Royale.

Also, congrats on the first trip report of 2018. I'm glad to hear that, despite everything, you enjoyed you trip.

Re: Feldtmann Loop Fishing

Feldtmann Lake has lots of pike. We've caught some decent ones right from the shore.

I think you can safely add Mount Ojibway: https://www.wunderground.com/personal-w ... ?ID=MOJIM4
Although labeled as "Welcome Island, ON" on wunderground, the coordinates and elevation appear correct (48.109 -88.607 > 1131 ft). As well as the MOJI id.
Added, thanks Ingo!

Re: Minong in May?

May on the Minong is the perfect time to go. It's always warm up on the ridge line of the Minong, but in May it's not HOT, so it's the perfect temp up there for the strenuous hike.

Rain is always a possibility, no matter what time of year, so you can't plan for that.

Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?

If I remember right, LifeStraws filter down to .2 microns, well below the suggested .4 margin for Isle Royale that I've seen. My only problem with those is having a water bottle with a big enough mouth to fit the filter in because it is not part of a water container system- I just have the two filt...

Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society at MM OE 2018

If you are in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area, or are planning on visiting the Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Expo on April 27-29, 2018 , stop by and visit my wife and I at the Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society (RoALPS) booth. We'll be there talking about the lighthouse's rest...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition

I ended up letting my wife use my dividend for a new vest.

Did anyone else notice that REI staggered the release of the dividend and the 20% off coupon? Clever bastards.

Re: First time IR trip in May. Does my gear list have any glaring holes?

Additions: * Bring enough clean underpants and socks for every day. Don't deviate from this. Trust me. Clean underpants and socks once you get into camp and for the next day's hike will do a lot to make you happy and comfortable. * Bring sunglasses * Bring Gold Bond * Bring hand sanitizer. * Bring ...

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition

I just got a tent with my excess dividend from last year. I don't spend mine straight away, the best sales are at season change so I go a 3 season ultralight tent in December for free. ( I can call it free because I don't interest). P.S. The life time satisfaction guarantee has changed a bit. You n...

What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2018 Edition

For those of us who are REI members, dividend season is right around the corner. Keep your eyes on your snail mail and email...notifications should be going out soon. So, what are you going to buy with your dividend and that sweet, sweet, sweet 20% off coupon? I might not even buy camping gear this ...

Re: Late May trip to the island

Late May/early June is my favorite time to visit IR: not many people, no bugs. I've been there when you're going and have hiked through snow, been snowed on, and then never saw snow. It's always a crap-shoot. Don't let "is there going to be snow" worry you. Pack some clothes appropriate for 30 degre...
