Re: First timer to IR any tips on my gear setup would be appreciated

HI, Welcome to the forums. Most of your gear looks good. You are obviously an ultra-lighter. I do have a couple of concerns. I looked up your quilt and I couldn't find the specs on the rating system used. Most companies are switching to the European system which is standardized and far more accurate...

Re: Landing a kayak at Belle Isle, Lane Cove?

Agreed. Lane cove is easy to get to, even if your tent site doesn't have a pull out there are a couple of spots along the trail to pull out. you might have to step into the one foot deep water.

Re: First trip to the island

It seemed like you were going light. no problems there. Last year I spent 10 days going from Rock to Moskey and back. Good reminder on the TP Ed.

Re: Water filter

I have used a few filters but my favorites are the Sawyer squeeze, mini and the micro. The biggest (squeeze) weighs in at 3 oz and is the one I now carry. the flow rate is just about as fast as I can squeeze the bag. If you get the squeeze plus for a dollar more, it comes with a connector to connect...

Re: First trip to the island

How is your age/health injuries? You have a nice relaxed pace. remember you don't have to stick to your itinerary, just keep track so you can update you you check out before leaving. I think you are missing out if you are so close to Moskey and don't stay there. Personally I would walk past Hatchet ...

Re: Mott Island trails

I agree. Aside from a pretty little beach at the far end of nature trail it is much like the north side of the Stoll Trail. I don't think I spent more than a couple hours hiking all of it. It was neat to see. one of the residences was gutted and under renovation when I was there. I have a few pictur...

Re: May Weather

I have been to the island a few times in May. I had on 20+ night where I wore everything I had and was still cold(I sleep cold). I now take my 20 degree EN bag and silk liner and my dry suit insulation (heavy sweats basically), stocking cap and warm sleep socks. I will be there about the same time a...

pack rafting to Siskiwit

I am planning a trip over Memorial Day from Snug to Moskey to Siskwit to Chippewa to Richie to Snug. I'm taking my sea kayak to Moskey and pack rafting from there. My big question is about Siskiwit, but other suggestions will be appreciated. I have only been on Siskiwit lake once and it was quite ca...

Re: Fishing questions; first time IR

So one HUGE danger at Isle Royale... If you go once, you will want to spend all of you vacations there. Then at some point, you will start making two trips per year... and then start looking for jobs in the area to be able to make more trips. be careful. :D

Re: Schedule Help

It's quite difficult to do your trip by boat without waiting around. the math says the plane is $200ish more than the boats (you have to pay for the inter-island ferry too). Capt Don has a point that going out of Copper harbor fits schedules better, his boat is all about the passengers and runs almo...

Re: What to expect in late Aug-early Sept.

I do two trips a year, one over Memorial day and one over Labor day. These are my two favorite times to be there. For your trip, depending on the year, berries may be in in prime season. Most years bugs are minimal if any. Cool temps and rain are more likely. Expect trails to be mostly muddy. camper...

Re: Fishing questions; first time IR

The boats easily handle four and some gear, they are standard 14' &16', two & three bench rental boats. Rock harbor (that length of protected water) is usually fairly calm; The hotel area is technically Snug harbor. There are plenty of hikes to do in the Moskey area. You could even start back to the...

Re: First-Timers to the Island

one of my standby trips: 25 Rock harbor to Daisy 26 Daisy to McCargoe cove 27 McCargoe to Moskey 28 Moskey to Rock harbor 29 shopping depart. So, yes longer days, but I'm 48 and not in great shape. Rock to daisy is a bit longer, but it's flatish, it's really not a big deal. If you don't make Daisy, ...
