Re: Carrying Water

I have a 4L MSR Dromolite I use for this, and also for long dry dayhikes. I'm outrageously fond of it, partly because it enables me to say things to mr torpified like "if you're out of water, I can drain my bladder into your water bottle." I use my cookpot to move water from the Dromolite to the saw...

Re: TR: 6/22-6/27 2019 : Greenstone Trail RH to Windigo (3MC-WCB-HL-SLD-WC)

NPS staff and fellow backpackers: Although there were more people, some rule changes and new requirements, the experience was like a broken drum – dang hard to beat!!!!. Park rangers were helpful, fellow packers were friendly and taking care of the environment seemed to be at the forefront of peopl...

Thanks for the detailed and animal-rich report! You do a great job of conveying appreciation for many phases of the island. Did anything strike your dad as notably different from his bicentennial visit?

Thanks for the legacy trip report---the locus classicus of the Treed-by-a-Moose story, to boot! Also, I applaud your experimental spirit!

Re: TR: 6/2019 GRT/Minong/etc.

Minnesotans! They have a lot to answer for! (In the spirit of full disclosure, "torpified" is a process name I acquired at Carleton College, in Northfield, MN, in the mid-80s.) This is actually the second consecutive trip where I've offloaded my sleeping pad to needy backpackers whose pads has burst...

Re: Need Itinerary Help! 4 night trip in early August

Given your account of your backgrounds, Plan A looks doable to me. Where in NE have you hiked? My basis of comparison is mostly VT, NH, and the Adirondacks. With respect to trails in those places, I feel like IR has less up-and-down and less technical treadways (which isn't to say that you won't be ...

That's getting around! (I wonder if anyone has ever bought one of those half gallon jugs of hot sauce from the Windigo store?) Congratulations on the moose, and thanks for the report.

Re: A few questions from a first timer

just to make explicit what you've already divined from the map: the lakeside stretch of the Huginnin (which is extremely awesome for jaded elderly people like me, and so probably extraordinary for the short and imaginative) comes AFTER the Huginnin camp if you're going clockwise. So you'd miss it if...

Thanks for the great (and wonderfully photo-captioned) report on a triumphant first* trip! It's a great relief to hear that I'm not the only one who presses my backpack into service as an airbag.

*Surely you need to return with the entire Big Adventure Discussion And Sports Society!

Re: 1st timer - Intinerary Review help

I think if I knew what I was doing the first time (an impossible proposition, because I've been 4 times and I still don't know what I'm doing), that's the way I'd have crossed the island! And to echo dcclark: you're not likely to regret carrying on to McCargo or W Chickenbone on Day 2---which will g...

Re: Itinerary Input...

that looks like an excellent scheme-- I think you've nailed LNT principle #1: Prepare and plan ahead! When this trip's over (and you're planning your next one), please let us know how the walking/fishing/red kayak spotting went.
