Re: First time trip in July 5 nights pls help!

You can't go wrong with a basic plan like: 3Mile-Moskey-McCargo-DaisyFarm-RockHarbor. Possible variations abound, and keep in mind the RH area rewards exploration (NB there's a one night limit at the RH CG.) Check out itinerary suggestions in other threads in this forum for more, and more detailed, ...

WHERE are you spending your REI dividend?

Through March 27 at least, not *in* the stores. Their online operations continue, with facilities added to deal with questions that would otherwise be asked in-store. They're paying their employees during this closure.

Re: Water Bladder repair in field?

I wonder if the kind of patch that comes with a therma-rest type air mattress would do the trick?

I for one have always been miffed that there aren't Juneberries in June. Whatever happened to truth in advertising?

Re: 1 person tent (from REI topic)

thanks, all! It's nice to have options. I'll report back on how this drama turns out. (Last year I went into REI intending to convert my dividend into a tent, and emerged with a sackful of new darn tough socks instead . . ..)

Re: Greenstone Trip Advice

There's a lot to choose from, and it's all good! If you do decide to cross the island: Unless there's a reason to go from Windigo to RH, you might consider traveling in the other direction. That way, when you get to the Minong/Greenstone choice point near west chickenbone, you'll have some informati...

Re: Itinerary questions in mid july

I think that's a great plan! The warmup backpack means you'll visit cool places you're bypassing on the Greenstone leg, in order to get to other cool places, like Lane Cove. The warmup backpack can also serve as a bit of a shake down cruise for fine-tuning gear. (It's not unusual to realize you've p...

Re: 1 person tent (from REI topic)

Thanks for the tarptent lead! I've thought about those, but have two hangups: 1. They're not free standing, so it seems like you have to stake them out really well to get a taut pitch. A fair bit of my camping is in really rocky surrounds that make planting stakes a challenge. 2. Even if I could get...

Re: Isle Royale Visitor Statistics 1940-2019

the numbers oscillate a lot --- huge jumps around 1985 and 2015, for instance. Maybe it's time for a predator-prey-tourist cycle study?

Aarrghhh --- I'm not in Ann Arbor this year. I'm going to prevail upon the housesitter to go. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2020 edition

I think I also said this last year: I'm ready for a new tent! My big agnes Flycreek 1p is getting threadbare, and the older and more decrepit I get, the more attractive a tent with a side entrance becomes. The Flycreek is semi-freestanding, and has a mostly-mesh inner tent you can use without the ra...

So that's it! When all I got was a blank screen when I pointed my browser at the forum's home page, I assumed I'd been black-balled.

Seriously, thanks to you and the other admins for keeping this place up and running. It made me very sad to think that it had evaporated!

Re: June Trip Feedback

A buffer day in case of flight delays would give *me* some piece of mind --- and also an extra day on the island, if all goes well! And if all goes well and the mileages in your original itinerary hit the sweet spot for you, one way to add a night to your trip would be to go from Hatchet to McCargo ...

Re: New Stove

I was out last weekend with it and have to say that it's incredibly convenient to decide that a hot drink would taste good and have that hot drink within a few minutes of making the decision. I just have to work on the best way to nest everything in my cook kit. The canister needs space that isn't ...

Re: Greenstone Itinerary Feedback

Campsites: I haven't cased them all! Like everyone, I love Moskey (sunrises) and McCargo (a nearby mine and acquatic wildlife ballet performances). I love Lane Cove too---I think the trail there is really fun, and I was lucky enough to experience it in a quiet and peaceful phase. The interior of wes...
