Re: experience with esbit stoves?

Thanks, all (and Hi, Brent!). The alcohol stoves look like a good option---you can get alcohol nearly anywhere, nearly anytime. My complication is that I also walk (when I can) in the Sierras, and alcohol stoves are periodically banned in some jurisdictions there because they're seen to pose a fire ...

experience with esbit stoves?

The last straw was an absurdist afternoon running around the Lodgepole CG at Sequoia Nat'l Park trying to beg an isobutane canister from a total stranger, because the park store was out. I've decided to retire my canister stove and find an alternative. This would be for my solo trips, where the stov...

Re: 1st Trip to IR

I took my first trip in June, and was worried in advance about population density at the campgrounds. (I'm not actually misanthropic, but I'm introverted enough that I stress out in situations where I might have to talk to strangers.) I was picturing a clearing with a cluster of tent sites, each in ...

Re: I've been given a chance for a small crowd Meet & Greet with John Vucetich

Two thing it's hard not to be curious about: 1) what's expected to happen with the moose population, now that the wolves are (apparently) basically out of the picture? Do different models make different predictions about how the prey population behaves in the absence of a predator population? 2) wha...

Re: water taxi (full stop)

I walked to Rock Harbor, and kayaked later out to Hidden Lake Dock (and beyond) -- I don't regret Plan A falling through After I was already on the Island and off the grid, I got an email from the lodge apologizing for the delay -- they say they're working their way out from under a pile of messages...

Only my imagination, I expect. But with the scout troops I'd already encountered representing the twin and quad cities, it seemed reasonable for the geometric progression to continue.

Re: 1st timer, GRT: Wi-HL-LC-RH

Mergansers: I've been studying pictures at Ducks Unlimited, and some of them were definitely mergansers! I think others were Goldeneyes and Black Ducks. I'm not sure that covers the bases, but I'm worried that I've already gone too far down the rabbit hole of caring which bird is which to ever emerg...

1st timer, GRT: Wi-HL-LC-RH; 6/ 20 -23 /16

This was my first trip, and a solo one to boot, so I tried to keep it simple. Sorry about the length of the report. As with walking, once I start writing, I have a hard time stopping. For the sake of those who prefer pith, I preface the narrative with a quantitative report. Quantitative: 1 pratfall ...

water taxi (full stop)

So I haven't managed to initiate two way communication with the water taxi operators. While I haven't exactly been stalking them, I have left several voice mail and (via Rock Harbor Lodge) email messages. I'm trying to figure out whether to feel unlucky or paranoid -- has anybody else been having tr...

Thanks for the suggestions! I may have to revisit Hwy 61 in order to act on them all . . . .

Dayhikes near Hwy 61?

North of Duluth, Hwy 61 looks to be teeming with parks. Any recommendations about where to stop for a quick (< 2 hr) walk on the drive up to Grand Portage?

by my lights, it's even more impressive that it's duck pin, even if it's lighter than our native midwestern bowling balls. Novelty counts!

Re: elementary juneberry question

Thanks berry much! I'm looking at a June visit --- hence my excitement at the nomenclature---so I guess I'll have to plan another trip for prime berry season.

Also: running to Saskatoon? Like by foot???

elementary juneberry question

When do juneberries come into season on IR? Would they be a rash fruit for a novice forager to forage? (I mean: are they readily distinguishable from berries one oughtn't eat??)

If these get answered, I have learned followup questions about Grant's tomb.

Re: First Time, Itinerary Posted, Solo Hike

Mark, It looks like I'll miss you by a few days -- I'll also be on my first trip, in theory from Windigo to Rock Harbor -- but I want to register my admiration for your goals and your training regimen. A bowling ball AND a medicine ball! (Where do you even find a medicine ball??) My meager counterpa...
