Re: Minong Trail Conditions

I'm back! And I'm happy to report that conditions on the Minong were great during my hike across from 5/25 - 5/27. Beaver crossings were completely manageable (I got through them all without getting wet, with careful foot placement); trail was easy to follow as long as you stayed on the lookout for...

Re: Rain Gear?

bugs: a headnet is key. If you do deploy it, it makes for much hilarity when you forget you're wearing it and try to interact with your face (eg scratch your nose or eat). Longsleeves, trousers (rather than a skirt, which I hike in in less buggy climes), a hat, and a buff also help with insect ameli...

Re: Feeble First-Timer, Seeking Affirmation

the current plan looks great! RH layover: if you do get a canoe (a half day comes gratis with a lodge room!), consider incorporating a hike to Lookout Louise (with an optional out and back on the quietest part of Greenstone Ridge). The trail has a cool boardwalk, nifty rock formations, and some dive...

a plea for trip reports!!

Trips are happening --- but where are the trip reports?? I fear Facebook is siphoning them off and diluting (NOT distilling) them into a few sentences posted along with an album. If you've been to the island this season, please take mercy on those of us who haven't, and write up an account of your a...

Re: Feeble First-Timer, Seeking Affirmation

Food is heavy, so a resupply scheme is worth considering. And it needn't entail backtracking, if your constraints permitted something like starting by taking the Voyageur to Chippewa Harbor, then working your way back to RH for 4-5 nights, followed by a 2-3 night victory lap in another direction, li...

Re: Feeble First-Timer, Seeking Affirmation

AFFIRMED! There's nothing feeble about having a good time. And you're going to! You've got a lot of great itinerary ideas to chew on, so I'm going to change the subject to packing. You'll enjoy the walking more if you don't carry more than you need to in order to relish the trip. One way to do that ...

Re: Minong Trail Conditions

I have the same questions you do! A few days ago someone who just did a lap of the island, including the Minong, posted a bunch of pictures on the public IR FB page, and answered some trail conditions questions in the comments. He claimed that the Minong conditions weren't too swampy, that there was...

Re: Another First Time IR Backpacker: Itinerary Feedback Requested

I want to echo the sentiments that you'll be back, and that it's hard to know how you'll feel about the housekeeping (and house carrying!) aspect of the endeavor until you've tried it. (I've got friends who are national-level competitive masters triathletes who consider backpacking 8 miles from RH t...

Re: Feedback on 5 day gear list

my information was directed more to Torpified, who stated she wasn't sure exactly what the specifics of the nastiness were all about, AND to anyone else reading the posts . When it comes to this risk I never like to leave an impression to a casual observer that the dangers might be light. The risks...

Re: Windigo to Sugar Mt.

We might overlap at Washington Creek! I'll be a muddy 50-something lady with a purple backpack. Also: I want to join the chorus of people predicting that you won't be smitten by Sugar Mountain's panoramas; second the suggestion that you consider canoeing in Washington Harbor for (at least part of) a...

Re: First trip itinerary, am I crazy?

Chippewa is beautiful. For my money, the ~4 mile spur trail you'd take to reach it from the Lake Ritchie trail junction, and then to return the next day, gets more interesting the further south you go. (It also had a lot of deadfall in early May 2 years ago.) If you stay at Chippewa, you'll either h...

Re: Feedback on 5 day gear list

it looks like you've got all the bases covered! notes/comments: The backup water purification tablets won't help with a particular form of nastiness (I forget which exactly) that's found in the inland lakes. I don't know what the official line is on whether tablets would be OK to use provided you dr...

Re: First timer to IR any tips on my gear setup would be appreciated

Personal preference: I like having (i) a microfiber towel (< 2 oz), for sopping up the condensation I can't shake off my tent before packing it up in the morning, (ii) camp slippers, and (iii) sun gloves (both for sun protection and to prevent trekking poles blisters). Also (probably things you're a...

Re: 2018/2019 Moose-Wolf Report now Available

it looks like the wolf population dropped precipitously (from around 50 to around a dozen) in the late 70s. What gives? Was it those epic winters? (I'm still reading the study--- if I come across an answer, I'll post it.)
