Re: Isle Royale Webcams

I agree it appears that getting more "prestigious" people or organizations to support this effort would be advantageous to success. The Google resources are obviously limited or at least well supervised. There are many people that may never see the top of the Greenstone Ridge again (like ...

Re: Isle Royale Webcams

I did a bit of research. I was surprised the first things Google showed me were of the older system from 5 to 6 years ago. It was a 42.5 lb setup with an 8 hour battery. Looks like one might need a partner to share the burden of the life support essentials in a place like Isle Royale. 2014 Youtube ...

Re: Isle Royale Webcams

Now we can work on getting the 165+ miles of total trail length (and maybe even some paddling routes) recorded for Google Street View Trekker using the backpack cameras as has been done for many hard to reach spots including other national park wilderness areas like the Grand Canyon street view. Th...

What an epic trip! Thanks for writing up a report that did it justice. I especially admired your team's perseverance and resourcefulness in the face of unanticipated and unpleasant developments, and also the balance of cohesion and individuality you struck. Are there pictures? I'd love to see the ga...

Re: TR: 7/5-7/12 2020 [HC-FL-SB-SD-MB-RH]

So glad that the gummie bears got found! Your team is going to deserve its zero day at Moskey! The summer after I graduated from college, I walked the PCT across Washington state with some other people waiting for grad school to start. Somehow or other, I wound up being the one who'd establish camp,...

Re: Water treatment

So, this leads to the question, why norovirus and why now? Was testing done on or near the Island or were surveys done in other national park areas resulting in a national memorandum. Assuming all of this is true as I'm still not a MD or epidemiologist. My personal outlook on filtering only anywher...

Thanks for the report so far, and please keep the episodes coming! Between the gummy bear rationing and the tent mishaps, I'm on the edge of my seat wondering how the party fares for the rest of the trip to Rock Harbor. I admire how laconically you describe the tent failures, by the way. I'm trying ...

THANKS SO MUCH for the report, and congratulations on your extensive swimming and on weathering the storms! It sounds like a tremendous trip---for one thing, moose are mentioned more frequently than insects. Were the latter in evidence? And did you keep a running tally on the former?

Re: TR:6/28-7/5 2020 [Hiking] RH-DF-MC-MB-DF-TM-RH

Hooray for the successful trip and the wonderful trip report! A few years ago I arrived on an early season boat, and had about one day of navigating trails that hadn't yet been brushed. (After that, trail crews had beaten me everywhere else I went.) It was brutal! Your family gets high marks for a w...

Re: Backpacking Lower Peninsula

there's the Potowatomi trail in SE MI -- a little over 17 miles, with two campsites and a yurt en route. I haven't backpacked it myself, but the backpackers I've encountered have seemed well pleased. If you go, bring head nets! https://www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?id=229&type...

Re: June 2020 First Timers w/Kids Itinerary #2

THEY ALL LOOK AWESOME. Just my $.02: McCargo -- which you see on itineraries 1 and 2 -- has a mine to explore, maybe a mile up the (open part of!) the Minong. Could be good for variety, and even the basis of a day trip, if it's your assessment that you can enjoyably travel between Moskey and McCargo...

Re: IR announces further openings 6/23/20

I wonder what the rationale for the Minong closure is? (My guess is that it has to do with drain on staff time and energy from patrolling/potential SAR operations along that corridor.) That is it. there should be a FAQ addressing this. Indeed there is! thanks for keeping the information flowing.

I'm catching up with the videos, through episode #6. Excellent work crossing the stream before Little Todd! Also, when I walked the trail early last summer in the same direction, I had a pratfall in more or less exactly the same place you did! It's not us --- it's a very local, very mild trail curse.
