Re: Now in my top 7 for "must have" cooking gear...

+1. Reynolds also make a "Grill" variety foil that is similar. You have to do something extreme to burn / stick food on it. Though I've not done it, Its strong enough to construct simple accessories out of like you describe. In related news, we stop by Windigo on Wednesday coming from Hugginin to pi...

Re: Extras

I've been conditioning on a swampy, unimproved trail system here for a few months, so far they have stayed dry after more than a few dunkings in places where it can't be avoided . However, I've had mine for a few years and re-waterproof silicone treat them, including last week in preparation. I repl...

Re: Extras

I destroyed a pair of Merrell Phaser peaks each of two years, so the idea of a breakdown is real. .... So that's discouraging news. I'm wearing a pair of those for an IR trip starting Saturday. I've had them a few years and they've been good all around. No foot problems, slipping, etc. What specifi...

Re: Check out page 48 of this report from 1905

Very interesting, especially that neither wolves or moose were documented.

I'm keeping this link. Thanks Howard!

Re: Extras

The trails can be rocky and rough, however 2 pairs of trail worthy boots sounds heavy. I would make sure the primary boots are sturdy, broken in and trusted. Another lightweight pair of shoes to shuffle around camp for sure, but if there isn't confidence in the primary boots; personally I would shop...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

Hi, I've poked around here as well as youtube videos gathering suggestions for hammock friendly campsites for where we're going. I've found pointers to site numbers at our destination campgrounds, except: - Little Todd - Hugginin Any good known hammock friendly site # suggestions for these 2 campgro...

Re: Trail planning, early August

We're coming 8/5. The jetstream seem to be parked in our favor:

Nice report. We're doing Feldtman in a few weeks. This really helped. Thank you.

Flying with a stove

Thanks, very useful info and link. Also for awareness, Isle Royale Seaplanes does not allow accelerants, including Esbit type solid fuel pellets, on their aircraft. You need to buy the available alcohol fuel on the island or ship solids and pick it up there.

Hammock friendly campsites

Thanks for the information. I have a light 2 person tent I have shared with my grandaughter but my 6 ft. teenage grandson may not be comfortable sharing such close quarters with his granny. His choice may be that or sleeping out on the ground though. I just got a kelty tent that will just do for me...

Re: Hammock friendly campsites

Jackie I'm going in early August with my daughter. We're doing Feldtman in addition to other trails. We're each bringing hammocks, but I also got us a lightweight 2 person tent based on comments here and also the advice in The Greenstone mentioned above. I'm much more comfortable sleeping in a Hammo...

Feldtman trails not up-to-date on GPSs based on OpenStreetMap

This thread is an FYI if you carry a GPS. (Its not about the reasons to not carry one, everyone can make their own choice.) The first map shows the correct view of the trail system The current, correct map from NPS https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/IsleRoyaleMap.png Some GPSs use O...
