Re: First Trip to Isle Royale Question.

Jess, I did McCargo to Lane Cove last year at mid-august. 13 miles seems right. It was a tough hike into Lane Cove as we were both tired. Starting at Lane you will have the advantage of getting the toughest part over sooner, before it gets hot. Myself and my hiking partner are late 40's and not in w...

Re: Huge Blisters 6 days before going to Isle Royale

Ditto on the BandAid Blister Block Cushions. That Compeed stuff is the best. I found these things at Target in 2003 or so in a slightly smaller size. They were ideal for my trouble spot on the outside of my big toes. I have been able to were them for up to a week at a time. I have not been able to f...

Re: 4 night trip, need advice

I'm in agreement with all that has been said about Island Mine. I spent a night there in 2006. It is in essence only a place to pitch your tent and spend the night. No view, no lake, little water. It is however, quiet and uncrowded. I also remember that the privy was solid and relatively "un-scented."

Re: Coffee making, best methods

TomM~ My coffee tips for Scout trips: Use the Stainless peculator. Line the basket with a filter. Add grounds to suit. Depends on how strong everyone can deal with. I think that we use one Tbs per 8oz water. (My memory is getting bad) Cover the grinds with another filter. Place on the heat. We use L...

Re: Catching up with the gang......

Sorry to hear about the job.
Things are bleak in Macomb & Oakland County, too.
I've been out of work since last April.
Kept somewhat busy with contract work.

Dreaming of a return trip......

BTW, did you review the NPS group size restrictions?
Seven or more requires special permit & reservations.
