Re: First trip coming up this month.. need advice!

Sounds like you got it under control. (at least the issues, if not the decisions ...)

Re: First trip coming up this month.. need advice!

Ingo... we are arriving in Rock Harbor via the Ranger II... but was thinking about using the Voyageur for the 2pm pick up at Belle Isle (portaging into the bay).. OR... arranging a water taxi pick up at Duncan Narrows. Does that make sense to you??? Unfortunately the Voyageur II schedule doesn't li...

Re: September Itinerary Advice

I guess thinking about it more, a short day after Hugginin means a long "free" day at Windigo. I was hoping for a shower at the Windigo end of my trip, but I guess the store will be closed by that point. I'm assuming there should be other things to check out, since it's almost a rest day at that po...

Re: September Itinerary Advice

I'd keep Huginnin in the plan and and have the alternative as Plan B if you feel you need a couple shorter days at that point. And there's nothing wrong with I.M. so long as there's water. Thought it was a pretty spot on a knoll in the woods.

Re: First trip coming up this month.. need advice!

As pointed out, the campsite issue shouldn't be your deciding factor, since you can just as well have full paddling/boating sites. But folks are expected to, and do, double up when things get full so you shouldn't have to move on. But if you do decide to paddle and are taking the Voyageur II, you co...

Re: First trip advice - staying at RH for 3 nights late Aug

Somehow it seems you see moose when you least expect, and you don't in the places folks tell you to look. Kinda like the old saying about catching a butterfly. You have a chance to see one anywhere, including around Rock Harbor and even possibly outside your door. So just be alert, quiet, and watchf...

Re: First time visiting - one night

... so I will likely do the Scoville Hike the day I get there and the canoe/mini hike to Lookout Louise the next morning before the 2:45p ferry. It's no fun to feel rushed. Especially on IR :). Also, the lodge transports all your gear between the boat and your room, so if you like to bring a cooler...

Re: First time visiting - one night

A couple more thoughts: - I think the Scollville Pt loop (4 miles) is the best hike on the island, so would do that for sure. It's a flat easy hike, but allow time to explore along the shore and just hang out on the rocks when you get there. - Instead of the water taxi to Daisy Farm, consider doing ...

Re: warning: Echinococcus granulosus / hydatid tapeworm eggs are NOT killed by hand sanitizer [very long post]

The relevant question for folks is should I be concerned and what should I do? Yes, tapeworm is known to exist on the island, therefore you should filter or boil all water you consume and avoid potential contamination of eating/drinking utensils with untreated water (e.g. don’t rinse your dishes in ...

Re: First time to Isle Royale - hike and paddle

It’s not the most backcountry plan, but something I’ve done a couple times and never been bored. You will see boats on Rock Harbor. But you hopefully get to Caribou Island with a great pebble beach, a visit to and up the lighthouse across the channel, Edison Fishery, and the wolf/moose researchers c...

Re: Weather forecast

I usually look at the wunderground.com forecasts for Grand Marais and Copper Harbor, in addition to the official NWS. Then average them. Then guess  Seriously, since it varies so much on the island and with the lake, I’m only looking for general patterns, but doesn’t affect what I bring, excep...

Re: TR: 7/14-7/19 2018 – Canoe paddle of the NE corner

Glad the weather cooperated this year! Will be doing a similar trip in Sept, but hoping to start at McCargoe with Belle Isle as plan B. The passage between the Hill and Davidson islands is another world isn't it. Seems like it's usually iffy getting in and out, but once there it's idyllically calm. ...
