Re: Marten on Isle Royale

Curious what's more likely: they crossed 16+ miles of ice or humans brought them over in the 90s (intentionally or not--although I'm not sure how hitching a ride would work). I'm inclined to lean toward the human explanation without any knowledge or evidence that martens may take that long of hike o...

Close encounters of the moose kind

(I've been trying to imagine what it would be like to have a moose brush up against your shelter when your shelter is a tent.) Scary as hell! Well it didn't touch the tent, but the hoof print was less than a foot from where my head was! It was eating for about an hour in the middle of the night, vi...

Amygdaloid Sea Arch Coordinates?

Heading out on Labor Day and spending a couple days at Belle Isle, hoping to explore Crystal Cove and Amygdaloid by canoe. Does anyone have coordinates for the sea arch? I've read that it's pretty much directly across from the Keyhole, but looking for a little more direction. Any other suggestions f...

Re: 1st Time IR Trip 5day/4nite Solo Advice Needed Please

Too much? That all depends on you--it's not for Torpified :), but definitely for me (but I mostly canoe). Agree that having some extra time at the end is good. Keep in mind that the seaplane is the least reliable transportation (i.e. most affected by weather), so making S Desor the first day may not...

Re: Advice for Our First Trip?

Kayak/canoe rates are here: https://www.rockharborlodge.com/rock-harbor-marina . They're the same at Windigo. I think a 1/2 day is 4 hours. Expect temps in the 50s to 60s. But could be anywhere from 30s to 80s at the extremes. Sept varies quite a bit as the seasons change. The cabins are up on the s...

Re: Todd Harbor questions

(1) The waterfall is west of the campground on the shore. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 mile? Saw it from a ranger boat, didn't hike out there. (2) Rocks are just past the group site on the lake (#1 I think). Not sure if that's what you mean, but there are large rocks there :D . (3) At the top of the hill. 1/2 m...

Re: Rock Harbor Lodge ?

I know folks have come off the trail and got a room before, but I really don't know. You'd have to call them and decide whether you want to take your chances or not. Obviously the only night that matters is the one you'll be there.

Re: Rock Harbor Lodge ?

It's a personal preference. Myself, I'd just as soon be in a shelter in the open air, sleeping in a sleeping bag on a hard floor--I'll be back to the so-called comforts of home soon enough. But I do understand the appeal of a bed and personal bath/shower. Also depends on the weather and conditions--...

Re: First Time Itinerary Advice!

Just had a thought--you could catch the Voyageur II at Daisy Farm (or Chippewa) instead of R.H., allowing you to stop at Hatchet Lake and avoid the 15 miler. If you already have reservations for R.H. it shouldn't be hard to change, but you do need reservations.

Gunnison River Gorge

Went rafting in the Gunnison Gorge in western Colorado last week, just downstream of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison Nat'l Park. Beautiful and remote--highly recommended if you get the chance. Class III-IV rapids, dam controlled so navigable all summer, although the water was low and rapids more te...

Re: First trip coming up this month.. need advice!

So what's the opinion on whether a canoe portage from somewhere on the Tobin Harbor trail to Three Mile CG is any sort of reasonable option, in the situation where the Rock Harbor Channel weather is too rough? I remember reading about someone who tried this and apparently there's no good place to t...

Re: First trip coming up this month.. need advice!

Safer? In general, I'd say no. Easier? Yes, if the weather is solid. Tookers (and Rock Harbor in general) is more exposed and can find you laid up on shore. Both from general size of the body of water, as well as there are some unprotected areas where rollers from the South can rock in. Tobin and D...
