Re: Food storage in kayaks?

I pack my meals individually in Zip-Lock bags and store them in the ends of the boat. They pack really well into those small nooks and crannies. I'll usually leave them there and take them out as needed. Since I have fiberglass hatch covers (Impex Serenity boat), I've never had critter problems.

Re: Seeking advice re headnet / bug screen

I use "The Original Bug Shirt." It's pricey, but it keeps them out.

Re: Kayak portage yoke experience or suggestions?

I've got the aluminum one that raises the boat. It works well as you can adjust it on your shoulder for going up and down hills. The biggest problem with it is that it does not collapse and has to be strapped upside down to the boat. On the other hand, it also makes a nice camp chair. I'm told (and ...

Re: Malone to Desor South

Last time I was there (2009) it was a bit dicey finding the trail at Ishpeming Point Tower.

Re: Minong III

I've done the RH to Widigo via the Minong twice. Never did it the other way, primarily because of a truly miserable climb up to the ridge shortly after you leave Windigo. Kind of the same reason I won't do the Feldtman Loop trail counter-clockwise again.

Re: Kayaking Layers: WetSuit or DrySuit?

I have a full Kokotat Meridian dry suit, complete with feet. It's expensive, but to my way of thinking worth it. I went in in early May near Blake Point a few years ago and, other than an externally generated brain freeze, stayed pretty warm for the couple of minutes it took to regroup. I like the G...

Re: Hook restrictions on a fishing lure?

FYI--Johnhens was elated when IR went barbless. Since he never catches any fish anyway, it makes his "One that Got Away" story somewhat more plausible!

OK, I thought I could go a full year without firing one over your bow, but alas....

Re: Shelter/Camp Etiquette

"Groups" have separate sites and don't use shelters. Shelters have stay limits, so you just can't set up in one and stay for a month. There is a chart on camps, shelters, and stay limits. Shelters are on a "first-come; first served" basis. If you get there first, the shelter is yours. Size is about ...

Re: Park Service to allow guns

Gee, Hikers, kayakers, canoers, and anyone taking a commercial vessel to the park=No Guns Private boaters=Guns Not that there is any history of private boaters and leave no tracers having any conflict. Let's see, if we arm one side, who gets the good campsites? Looks like I'll have to dig the old Ke...

Re: Malone Bay

I've hiked in and out of Malone from the Greenstone (actually started at Siskwit campground that day) and back. The trail can be tough to find. When you get to the boardwalk on th SW end of Siskwit Lake, remember that you are only 1/2 way there. You've still got three and one-half miles to go. I was...

Re: Shelter Graffiti

The last time I visited Belle Isle, there were steno pads in each shelter for the purpose of leaving messages. I think they covered about three years worth. I remember being alone at Belle Isle for five days and enjoyed reading them in each shelter.

Re: Backpacking Lunch

Hummus is really good. You can premix it before you take off in the morning. Add garlic, olive oil, etc. I've also done the same thing with tabouli. Both good. Or you can eat it dry and let it rehydrate in your stomach on the trail. (your eyes will look like that when it forms that big ball ...
