Re: Coin laundry on the island?

If you are day hiking and staying at the lodge, weight is not much of a concern. I would suggest bringing extra clothes and not washing. The washer dryers are far from cheap. I don't remember exactly, but I think $6-8 for a wash and more to dry.

Re: Wet Suit Advice

I have a camero shorty/longjohn combo in 3 and 4 mill. The fit is nice, but the cut is more for surfing/standing than sitting and big arm movements. I would say 4 mill wold be best unless you are real close to shore. like I noted in a previous post, you can be 3-4 feet from shore a lot of the time. ...

Re: Tent Camping Questions

The campgrounds are set up quite nicely. Most people gravitate to the shelters, so they fill first. I have never been to a campground that was completely full. Even if all the tent sites are occupied, most campers are willing to share their site with you (they are setup for multiple tents). I wouldn...

Re: Leaving canoes?

I have left my really expensive kayak (not bragging, I bought for cheap with hole include) for a couple of days tucked out of the way, but still visible, at multiple pull outs. I don't know if anybody borrowed it, but it was there when I got back.'

Nope, you have to go back and play on them again.

Re: Circumnavigate Kayak Questions

1. Short answer... not a good idea for a novice, especially a solo novice. I would suggest, at a minimum, any solo paddler have strong bracing skills and rolling or wet reentry skills. (they make it look easy on you tube) 2. You would need a "real" sea/touring kayak. I have seen some recre...

Re: Feedback for Hiking Route June 15-21

Welcome to the Forum. I'll start by saying that with your experience, you won't have any problem with either route. I did the Desor to Todd section a few years ago without any difficulty and I am closing in on 50 with a dad body. Both of your routes have some back and forth across the island, so you...

Re: Feedback on May 27-31 Hike

Once up and on the Greenstone, the miles go pretty quickly. there isn't as much up and down as will be found on the rest of your trip.

I found a relief map a while ago, lets see if I can post it...

Re: Traveling with small children and Seniors

Most topics were covered above. I will only address one. "multiple hip replacements and osteoarthritis" suggests some serious bone issues. In my experience, these issues don't fair well in a slip and fall. Outside of most of the campgrounds (and inside some) the travel gets rough, wet and ...

Re: Feedback on May 27-31 Hike

Hi Mark, Welcome to the forum. I have been to the island a lot, but I still learn from the folks here. Your plan looks quite comfortable unless "see(ing) Mt. Franklin/Mt. Ojibway" indicates you are going to go up to the Greenstone and back down to Daisy. That would be a good workout, but n...

Re: Why we need paper maps

I dropped my map once and accidentally stepped on it, luckily it still worked when I picked it up. I fear that I will have to replace it soon though, I can't find the door to change the batteries.

Re: August group trip Poison ivy?

I do have to dispute the ticks. About six years ago, I found a tick inbeded when I headed out for a swim at Moskey. It was the only time and my trail mates didn't have any. That was the only time though.

Re: August group trip $ Poison ivy?

I am VERY allergic to poison ivy. I am occasionally hospitalized when it gets really bad. I am scared of the stuff. I have never got it on Isle Royale on my many trip to the island. I often leave the trail to gather berries or take pictures while wearing shorts. So I am with Midwest Ed on this one. ...

Re: Fuel Cost

For the most part everything is a couple of dollars more than the mainland. I think I paid $7.95 for an otherwise $5.95 can of iso gas. I have never bought liquid fuel, but I don't remember the cost being that shocking. remember you can take fuel on the boats, not the airplanes.
