Re: Windigo Store

In June you could by a dozen eggs, a pack of bacon, milk. They had hot chocolate mix separate ($.75) or in packs. Other than instant chocolate, did they have anything a backpacker would need? Basic backpacking meals (e.g. chilli mac, cheese mac)? Instant soups? Nuts, dried fruit, gorp? Powered milk...

Probably true. It is the most common species. I find it hard to distinguish in this photo. From the above or below it might be easier.

Re: Speaking of Food

Yes, farfalle looks like little bow ties; bunched in the middle. I might try fusilli (little spirals) next time. My single experiment I tried what we'd like to do on the trail: Bring water to a boil and pour just enough over the dehydrated pasta and sauce to rehydrate, stir and wait. This would be t...

Re: Speaking of Food

Hey Don, we actually go al dente on the pasta before we dehydrate and it works out perfectly. The pasta rehydrates well and is no longer al dente (I like my pasta well-cooked). Hmmm. Well, I just have the one data point and my al dente pasta rehydrated to a sort of chewy state. I may need to experi...

Re: july 19th to July 26th (we actually came back the 25th)

-Gearwise. Maybe lighter tents, lighter pads. I even think a water proof light shelter would do instead of a tent (I don't know if those do exist). We also had a coolman dual fuel stove and a Brunton fuel can. So weight could be cut by having a stove that uses the fuel can too...an optimus or somet...

Re: Speaking of Food

I just tried dehydrating then rehydrating pasta & sauce. I read that pasta can be cooked then dehydrated and it won't need to be bolied again, just add hot water. It worked pretty well but I think the pasta needs to be over cooked (really soft) before it's dehydrated. I dehydrated my favorite pa...

There are a lot of shelters in NPs and NFs. I've never seen any with bug screen. IR shelters are almost like cabins.

Re: Wanting campsite/dockage availablity information

Shelters are at a premium. Bring a tent - you should find tent spaces available. With an 18" boat they should be able to bring a nice big tent, cots, lanterns & all the comforts of home. Once, at the end of a barrier island backpacking trip we made our way to our pick-up point to find our ...

"cooking meals" covers a lot of territory. Everything from just heating water for instant soup and freeze-dried meals to baking cakes and roasting a turkey from scratch. Different stoves use different amounts of fuel for the same task. It's best to know what your stove uses for they types ...

It's great to hear these positive reports. I gathered things were not so good ten years ago. I read about stacks of letters to the park superintendent complaining about boaters' roudy behavior, etc.

Re: weather and bugs

Many years ago I purchased a turkey hunter's smock at a close-out sale. It's a hoodie made of camo misquito net with a face veil. I keep it stored in a zip-loc bag with my DEET bottle. The theory is that the smock is saturated with DEET, so I don't need to put the stuff on my skin, except my hands a...

Did anyone wear any mosquito-proof clothing such as head nets, mosquito-net hoodies, etc?
