Re: Early June Itinerary--Some questions
Thanks! I thought it looked like about 1.5 miles. What GPS did you use? I was just going to hit it with a compass but should probably use more advanced tech. Sounds like I'll have quite a climb to get on the greentone from the valley. I'm kind of surprised they haven't built a trail there yet.

Re: Early June Itinerary--Some questions
Here's another thought: has anyone here bushwhacked from Little Todd to Ishpeming Point? The big part of my mileage that day is staying on-trail. But if I can take a straight line to the ridge I'll save myself 9 miles. Alternative is just to drop Malone from the plan and do it another time.

Re: Itinerary Feedback--late May to early June
You're doing a pretty similar itinerary to my plan at around the same time. I personally wouldn't choose to leave from Moskey on the last day. The trail isn't awful but that's not leaving any margin for error. It's rocky and muddy, but you know your pace.

Re: What are you spending your REI dividend on? 2017 Edition
I ended up buying an REI Igneo 17 sleeping bag. Wanted something lighter and more compressible than my old 4 lb bag.

Re: Campground in Grand Portage
I wonder if you could split your 2 night stay up and do a night before you head to the boat and the night you come back off the island? We're doing an August BW trip Sunday - Thursday and staying Thursday - Saturday in Lutsen. All along the north shore it's a 2 night minimum. It seems rates go up a...

Re: Campground in Grand Portage
While I've never been to IR via GP, I've been hiking the Superior Hiking Trail for several years. The problem you'll run into is a lot of hotels require a 2-day minimum stay that time of year. I have stayed at both the Cascade Lodge a bit south of Grand Marais, and the Mangy Moose in Grand Marais. B...

I usually pick mine up at Wal-Mart before the trip and keep it in my pack.

Re: Early May Trip Concerns
My only trip so far was the last week of May, and bugs were not an issue. Quick changes in weather were. Sunny and warm one minute, cold windy and rainy the next, then back to sunshine. I came across a pregnant cow moose and her yearling male and they didn't give two squats. Catch a cow with a baby ...

Re: Cooking in shelters
I'm guilty of cooking in the shelters with my catfood alcohol stove. It was cold, rainy, and humid. Since alcohol burns very quickly, even if I had a spill it's highly unlikely the shelter would catch fire. If there's been a dry spell, I wouldn't risk it.

Re: Favorite Mountain House meals
I'm about 2 years late to the conversation, but I have a very clear "Top 3" that make it on every trip. I usually do a couple week-long trips per year and use a mix of freeze dried and other instant-style meals like mashed taters, stove-top, and pasta sides. Chili Mac, Beef Stroganoff, and...

Re: Early June Itinerary--Some questions
Don't think anyone will say East over West Chickenbone. East is away from the lake and West is right on it. Hatchet is a nice CG on a lake. Not spectacular but nice. And I can't conceive of those miles so Hatchet would be a nobrainer for me. On my trip last year I kept most of my days at 8-10 miles...
