Re: Early season ice on inland lakes?
We have done many trips to Malone/Siskiwit Lake the week before Memorial Day. No ice, though it can still be cold and snow usually happens. We are kayaking. Fishing is great on the inland lakes, we get Lake Trout, Whitefish and of course big Northerns from Siskiwit.

Re: Final Horne fire update
......Light smoke plumes could be seen on both sides of the Greenstone Ridge. The fire was left to slowly burn itself out this fall and winter as rain and snow eventually blanket the island. The final map, reflecting more accurate measurements of the burned area, showed the fire at 335 acres..........

Final Horne fire update
From the NPS: Horne Fire Update: Park rangers closing Isle Royale in late October took one last look at the Horne Fire before heading back to Houghton for the winter. At that time, the fire was continuing to slowly smolder in a few places, mostly in the thick duff layer. Light smoke plumes could be ...

Re: Half Day Paddle Near Windigo
Washington Harbor and creek make for a nice paddle. We paddled up Washington creek in our kayaks (17' and 16') till the creek narrowed to where we had to back paddle to get out. We did not see any moose, though we did have moose in the creek later in the day. We had a nice paddle down Washington har...

Re: How much should you assist other hikers on their plans?
I don't offer advice or make suggestions unless asked. I have come across paddlers in canoes attempting to paddle the open lake on days when they would get into trouble, and asked if they knew what the marine forecast was. Upon sharing the forecast info, the paddlers changed their plans.
