Re: Greenstone or Minong?
My favorite pictures are from the Greenstone/Rock Harbor Trail trip. My favorite memories are from the Minong trip (bird attacks notwithstanding). I would do either one over and over if I could. This year was going to be Feldtmann Loop but wife's schedule killed it.

Re: PERMETHRIN
I always treat with permethrin and I do it specifically because of ticks. Having added a cat to the family I obviously have to be much more careful when I treat now, but I'm a believer.

Re: Pictured Rocks!
Altran will probably work with you if you give them a call. There is at least one other shuttle service however the name escapes me.

Re: Rock Harbor Restuarants
I ate a couple times at the snack bar next to the restaurant, pizza, burger, that sort of stuff. After a few days on the trail any hot meal and a beer is going to be pretty good. Since that food is pretty good without the hike that makes it downright fantastic coming off the trail. They had some goo...

Re: First Timers
My first trip I did RH to Lane Cove on day 1. It was 90 degrees and sunny at the end of August and that was a "fun" one. I think there's only four sites and luckily there was one left, although I'm sure people would have shared. Many people save Lane Cove for last night. Day two I went fro...

Re: QUESTIONS!!!!!! first venture to IR!
From a food perspective, I used http://www.packitgourmet.com/ my last trip. They were all various degrees of delicious and very easy to prepare. I had the gumbo, chicken and dumplings, and tortilla soup. I supplemented with the ready to eat chicken in the foil pouch from the grocery store. +1 on Pa...

Re: Water filter system query
I have used the MSR Miniworks with a collapsible bucket and a Platypus Big Zip/Sawyer SP122 setup. The MSR worked fine but I love the Sawyer setup. I've also used the Katadyn Basecamp (for solo packing no less) in the U.P. but not on the island. It would work also. If you use the Basecamp keep an ey...

Re: Pictured Rocks Recommendations?
Just noticed you said car camping. Don't think you'll be hitting Trappers Lake in that case.

Re: Pictured Rocks Recommendations?
I took a detour just to see Trappers Lake cg and really wished I had made it a night on my trip. I thought it was pretty cool. Looks like you'll want to check on the water situation there though - specifically Trappers Lake.

Re: Water
ETB - check this out. I've posted it before. This video, while not mine - is more or less identical to my setup. Might not be for you but since you're Sawyer-ing already I thought I'd bring it up again. I know Rafiki and Sean liked it.

Re: Porkies 3 nighter?
Trap Hills can best be described as 'you will work for your views'. It was a cool trip but you need to be in decent shape. I was hurtin'.

Re: Water
I carry micropur tabs just in case. Not ideal but beats not filtering and I'm too much of a weight weenie for a second filter. The one I carry can be back flushed in the field.

Casino is very "smokey" but it's fine overall. REALLY good fried chicken and onion rings at the restaurant.

Re: Solo Hiking
I think the accessibility works nicely as a jerk-filter because you meet the coolest people on IR. I've only done two trips (both solo but that's he norm for me) but I would second the ease of trail following in most places. I can confirm that the Minong was a little tricky to follow here and there ...
