Re: What national parks haven't you visited, but would like

Old thread, but there's lots of good info here for newbies and I didn't want to start a new thread for this: Ever heard of Kentucky's Red River Gorge (inside the Daniel Boone National Forest)? I still didn't do my Porkies trip and this is about the same distance (9 hours) from the western suburbs of...

Re: TR of sorts from the Early Days

Wow! I just read this. Thanks for posting this, John. Catch this quote:

"Without the Park Service,
there might now be a highway between Rock Harbor and
Windigo, instead of the trail for serious hikers."

I don't think so, but it sure made me pause.

Re: Backpacking Blogs

My buddy and I used to visit Mike's site a couple times a week and all of a sudden it seemed like his site just stopped being updated. For quite a while we wondered what happened to him. I hope he's doing well. We conversed several times shortly after I started my website and he asked if I would be...

Re: Porcupine Mtns one of 10 Best State Parks

Found another Porkies trip report from a guy who has also been to Isle Royale and Yellow River State Forest in Iowa. He has a good web site:

Re: Backpacking Blogs

I think a lot of people were also worried about Mike Tremblay a couple of years ago. Mike ran the old Isle Royale web board and still runs IsleRoyale.Info. By the way, I noticed the other day that he added a link to this board. It was the first activity I had noticed in a couple of years, so that's ...

Re: Backpacking Blogs

[quote="Kevinl"]One of my favorite podcasts (and accompanying blog) is/was Doing Stuff Outdoors. Sadly, Gary Mittelholz, the guy responsible for it, died while CC skiing last week. There is a huge backlog of shows on his website, itunes, or however you might prefer to access those things. ...

Re: USS Isle Royale - United States Navy Ships named after N

And here's the rest of the story (from Wikipedia): After she was decommissioned on 11 March 1970, Isle Royale was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 15 September 1976. Custody was transferred to the Maritime Administration, for disposal; Isle Royale was sold by MARAD on 1 December 1977, to Wat...

USS Isle Royale - United States Navy Ships named after NPs

Not particularly relevant to anything, but I thought this was interesting: http://www.nps.gov/pub_aff/maritime/navships.htm USS Isle Royale - AD-29: USS Isle Royale was launched by Todd Pacific Shipyards, Inc., Seattle, WA, 19 September 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Greer A. Duncan; and delivered to the N...

Re: We are looking for some feedback

Yeah, I like the idea of some food on the VII. We didn't have much to munch on for our trip from GP to RH on 7/22/2009. I think I munched down 2 or 3 of your Payday bars or the like. How about chips, nuts, sloppy joes, chili (great for guys that will be tenting in a few hours), ham & cheese sand...

Re: Porcupine Mtns one of 10 Best State Parks

The problem with the Porkies is that I feel guilty. If I'm going all the way to Lake Superior, I really ought to just go to Isle Royale! :!: I guess I'm going to try the Porkies before the island opens.

Haven't been to the Porkies. I really want to and I'm thinking about going in late April or early May for 3-4 days of backpacking.

Isle Royale film coming to Elgin on May 10, 2010!!!

Everybody - I spoke to Mimi last night and she sent this announcement. She also put on the November 2007 presentation at the Elgin library with Rolf and Candy (who will not be at this presentation). Hi Larry, Please forward this to all who love Isle Royale and post on any websites. "Fortunate W...

John,

Sounds like a fantastic trip! Thanks for posting this.

Thank you again for all the help with our upcoming trip. I'll have to send you the latest itinerary, but we took your advice on not trying to combine backpacking with the canoeing. We'll be on IR from July 22-28.
